Chapter Two
At this time of night, Burger King was mostly empty.
There were only what seemed to be three workers, and there was only one guy sitting by himself in the corner of the Fast Food joint. But obviously they had to have a decent amount of business at night, otherwise why would they be open twenty four hours?
“Get whatever you want.” Jackson told me with a kind smile on his face. “I’ll pay for it.”
I was a little hesitant, especially since this guy had already spent five grand on me. We haven’t even known each other for an hour yet, and I was already blowing his money all over the place and planning to bum over at his place.
“You sure?” I asked hesitantly.
Seeing my apprehension, he seemed to only smile even brighter. “I’m sure.”
Well, if he was sure…
“Can I have a Whopper with the side of large fries and Pepsi to drink?” I asked the girl behind the counter.
“Sure!” She chirped, and I wonder how much energy it took for her to be that happy. I mean, it was eleven o’clock on a Monday night, and I’m sure the last thing she wanted to be doing with her Monday was working an eight hour shift a job she probably cared less if she still had tomorrow.
I appreciated her effort though.
“And you sir?” She asked, turning to peer over at Jackson.
“I’ll have the same thing.” He said with his ever so pleasant smile, and I saw the girl briefly staring at him for more than a couple seconds before she seemed to snap back at reality. She quickly punched the order into her screen, then glanced to the both of us again.
But I noticed how her eyes lingered just slightly on Jackson, and how she had mostly posed the question to him.
“Anything else?”
Jackson glanced to me, and I nearly shook my head to let him answer, but instead I answered for the both of us.
“No thank you.” I tried to say as pleasantly as possible.
She glanced to me, and I think she was getting the hint as her own smile faltered slightly. But she didn’t try to direct anything specifically to Jackson again as she punched in a few more things then said to the both of us, “That’ll be $9.89.”
Jackson didn’t even bat an eye as he handed a card over to her, and damn did that card look fancy. It was completely black on the one side, no writing or printed in numbers anywhere on it. I was instantly curious to know what kind of card this was, and even the girl herself blinked at it before like she had never seen such a thing. She looked confused on how to run it, but then she attempted to just like she would any other card.
The bill was paid for in seconds, and she handed the fancy piece of plastic back over to Jackson. “We’ll have your order done in just a few minutes.”
“Let’s go sit down as we wait.” Jackson said to me, and even though I knew it was a suggestion, he said it as if I weren’t meant to say otherwise.
Not that I minded. After all, I was pretty lazy, and the idea of sitting was more than welcomed as I followed him over to the table.
“So what is the job offer?” I couldn’t help but ask, sliding into a chair across from him.
I knew I probably shouldn’t be asking again, since this would be the third time I have asked and he made it clear earlier he wanted to be the one to bring it up again. I expected a sharp reply, but when I glanced up to meet his gaze, he seemed to be studying me.
