an appearance of something that only occurs at night.

LORIAN, PREFERABLY Lora, was a good person. Really, she was. The thing about being a good person though, is that it's a tad hard to enjoy the lifestyle of one when you don't have any money. And yes, Lora knew that that went against everything a good person was, but when you think about it, you can't give anything away when you don't have it. And she had nothing alright.

Life had been easy before the Narnians. Though Lora knew somewhere in the back of her mind that Narnia was rightfully theirs, she didn't feel bad saying it. She had been happy before the war, living not far from the city, near the sea where she and her father spend most of their slow days fishing, selling the fish they'd caught at the market. They didn't have much then either, but at least they'd had each other. That had been enough.

But a little girl could dream. Lora had always liked shiny things. Running around on the shore she'd imagined treassures buried beneath the sand and tales of Pirates and Princesses. According to her father she'd gotten that from her mother, who, before she'd passed away during labor, would always been caught up in her daydreaming. Her father wasn't like that at all, he and his wife had been complete opposites, but they had loved each other unconditionally. He didn't care for tales, he lived in the present, not in some made up world. He had also never cared for money or things, 'cause that's all they were: things. He had his baby girl, who, even though her birth had cost him his wife, he loved more than anything. She was the perfect mixture of both her parents: small chin, defined cheekbones, tan skin, brown hair and brown eyes, a beautiful Telmarine girl.

And though they had little, the dark eyed beauty had been happy her whole youth. Growing up with fresh air, a whole beach to explore and curious trips to the Telmarine city nearby were enough for a child to enjoy life.

But once adulthood had caught up to her, life became more challenging.

After King Caspian the ninth and his wife had died, his brother, Miraz, had taken over. Things had gotten much more difficult after that. Trade with Archenland and Calormen had stopped, resulting in hard times for the average Telmarine. The fish trade didn't do as well as before and Lora, who was now heavily involved, became worried that they wouldn't earn enough to get by.

But everyone was struggling and it showed. The city wasn't what it had been anymore, but as Lora and her father had walked over the marketplace he had made her promise that, as long as they had each other, they would never stoop as low and steal.

When Lora thought back to that promise she cursed fate for listening in. Because her father hadn't been around much longer after that.

When the Narnians, who had only ever been a myth to Lora, had formed an army to take back their land, Miraz had gathered his own army. All men able to lift a sword had to fight, her father had been one of them.
