Talia (8):

Once, my sister and I went to shop for fish for my very first pet. I found this pretty small goldfish.

I liked it because then I can watch it grow up and give birth to more tiny wiggly fishes. I bought her a mate for 15 cents. The name was Makai.

I named her--it was a her--Chess. Now when we found Chess, she was had some black and white spots on her. That's why her name was Chess. But, the store was already starting to close, so we had to hurry and go home.

My sister said it would be nice for her and her mate to have a big tank and I agreed. We place the two into the fish tank after we set it up. There were little blue rocks all over the bottom and aquatic green plants to decorate the scene. When I put the two fish in though, I thought it was odd that they weren't swimming out and about. I mean they were in a big fish tank. Mother said it was at least 50 gallons.

Goldfish can grow very big in a few months...I heard.

Anyway, I quickly so to bed because it was past curfew now, and so did my sister. I couldn't wait to see my pets tomorrow. I snuggle into my sheets and wait for sleep.

The next few days, everything was fine. We fed the fish regular fish food and watched them swim round.

But it was until a week after everything, it started to be really weird. Day one of that week and Chess was growing bigger. She was an inch long at least and her fins were growing too.

Day two, she was two inches long. Her mate, Makai, didn't grow. My sister guessed that females are supposed to be bigger than the males. She joked she was pregnant. I didn't think much of it. Not yet at least.

Three on day three, then four on, you guessed it, day four.

By day five I was scared because it was five inches long and there was barely any gold-orange. Mostly just black and white. My mom and dad say that she isn't supposed to grow that fast in a week--excluding the days when we first got her. The scariest thing was that her mate was gone.

I looked all over the fish tank! Even took out the plants that were growing inside the tank. Makai just wasn't there. I was sad because I really liked him more than Chess. He didn't scare me like Chess did for the past days.

Sis says Chess probably ate him. I was so sad.
-----------------

The week after that was the worse. Chess was gone. I couldn't find her anywhere too. She just...disappeared. Mother says that it was impossible for a fish to just vanish without any trace. But after what I saw, I think not.

Present:

I woke up from my bed, climbed out of my pink bunny pajamas, and brushed my teeth. I quickly got ready because my friend was suppose to come over today for a play date. At 12:00 on Saturday and today was it. When I opened the door to go downstairs, I get a whiff of a nasty smell.

I gag. It was like dead...FISH.

I rush down to see my mom spraying the air with an air freshener. My sister was there complaining about the smell to our dad, who shrugged it off and opened the windows. I stick my head outside.

Ah, nice fresh air!

My mom was on the phone. I heard her talk to someone. She said something about how there was the smell of old rotting fish when she woke up this morning.

"Darcy, I'm sorry, but the smell is way to strong. I've tried to get rid of it all morning!!" She exclaimed tiredly.

" I don't know what to say, I mean we planned this day out for our daughters to meet up for the first time. Why didn't you deal with it before it got so bad?"

"I have no clue where it came from, I woke up and it smelled like dead fish in a sweaty gym locker room over the summer!"

" You say as if you know what it smells like." The voice on the other side said. " It can't be that bad, can it?"

" I'm telling you it is! I have a good clue about what it might be though."

" Redisa, this is really not a big deal. How about we go to the park nearby your place, if it smells so bad that you want to vomit?"

"Do you expect me to not be able to go back into my own house afterwards? As you said, 'if it smells so bad.'"

The sounds were cut off by me as I walk to the door leading to the garden. I wonder when Taluie is coming. I want to go to her place for a sleepover, but I can't until my parents meet hers. I sigh.

Author's Note: It really is a Koi fish I believe. But I have seen them in the same tank in the stores, so I thought they were goldfish.

I guess you can see what Talia thinks about Koi fish and Goldfish.
