will byers and mike wheeler walked down the street, on their way to school. there was a nice breeze and the hawkins sunshine, shined down on the cement pavement.
"shit, i'm totally gonna fail kaminsky's test!" mike wailed, as he frantically shuffled through his pale blue stack of notecards.
"mike, you're gonna do fine! just concentrate and read the question carefully, and you'll be fine." will assured him, both his hands resting on the straps of his backpack.
"no, no." mike repeated, shaking his head. he suddenly turned to will. "hey. can we skip today? please?"
"mike!" will said, shocked. he stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. "absolutely not!"
mike groaned.
"please, will, i'm really not feeling confident today. with the whole breakup with el, i've had trouble focusing." he said, pinching the bridge of his nose. will's expression softened a little, and he turned slightly red as he remembered the day that mike had ended things with el.
"oh. yeah. right." he said. he'd been meaning to ask why. mike hadn't necessarily specified the reasoning behind his actions. mike looked up at him hopefully. will sighed. "ok, fine."
mike's face lit up, and without thinking he grabbed will in a tight embrace and kissed his cheeks.
"thank you, thank you, thank you! god, you're the best." mike exclaimed, as he kept walking as if nothing had happened. will stood behind, his eyes wide and his cheeks flushed harshly.
"uhh, yeah, s-sure. uhh-" they kept walking in a comfortable silence. finally, mike spoke.
"do you, uh, want go just hang out at the junkyard with me? since we're skipping?" he asked. will nodded.
"uh, sure." they walled in the direction of the junkyard, quietly chatting about sweet nothings.
once they reached there, mike and will dropped there backpacks near a rusty car and climbed into the creaky old bus. they sat down on seats across from each other.
"thanks again will, you have no idea how much of a favor you've done for me. how can i repay you?"
will shrugged. "i don't know. maybe uh," he paused before continuing. "maybe you could tell me why you broke up with el?" mike stiffened visibly in his seat. "you don't have to, obviously! i just- i want to be able to...help you? in case you need someone to talk to? but, its fine. sorry i asked, i shouldn't ha-"
"because i realized my feelings for someone else." mike suddenly said. the air was fell silent between them.
"what?" will said, confused. "wh-who...?" shit. would he have to go through the same situation? seeing the boy he absolutely adored and loved, with someone else?
mike looked up.
"they, uhhh...they've been around for a long time. they've stayed with me through thick and thin. and i spent time figuring myself out because of my feelings toward this person." will listened carefully. who could this person be?
"finally, i came to the conclusion that people would view at as 'not normal' or some bullshit like that. but i don't care anymore. and i just hope that person feels the same way about me. because when this person went through some of the worst shit ever, they still stuck by me. they were selfless in every possible way. and i-" he stopped. his eyes had been glued on will the entire time, watching his expression change. "i just need them to know...that i love them."
will didn't think. he inched forward on the leather seat towards mike. but mike had different ideas. he got up and slid into the seat right next to will, so close their thighs touched. mike stared into will's eyes. will stared back, melting in the dark brown eyes looking back. mike leaned in close, to the point where he could see the small flecks of gold in will's green hazelnut eyes.
"you want to know who it is?" he whispered, his breath washing over will's face. it smelled of the lavender peppermint mints that will had gotten him last week for valentines day. for the lucky girl! he had remarked, nudging mike.
"who?" will whispered back. and without a second's hesitation, mike had leaned in and closed the space between their lips.
will's fingers reached up and tangled in mike's soft, raven curls as they kissed passionately. mike pulled will closer wrapping his slender fingers around will's waist. they kissed for a few long seconds. a few long second of pure paradise.
when they pulled away, both boys blushed harshly, but had smiles tugging at their lips.
"lucas." mike whispered. will rolled his eyes and slapped mike's arm as mike burst into laughter.
"you're an idiot, michael wheeler." will said, giggling. mike's expression softened.
"yeah. i am. for you." he said, grinning cheesily. will shook his head and smiled. he just grabbed the collar of mike's shirt and pulled him to him, reconnecting their lips.
and they finally felt, safe.
