It was a rather windy Wednesday afternoon and you had just gotten off your 10-hour shift. You placed your hands in your pockets and started walking towards the nearest coffee shop. You lived in the busy borough of Brooklyn, some thousand kilometres away from Seoul, far away from the man who broke your heart.
It had been 10 years. 10 years since you had last heard from Seungcheol, 10 years since he promised to love you despite the odds, and 10 years since the day he shut you out of his world.
You still remember that day all too well — for today marked 10 years since the day he asked for your hand in marriage.
--
"Will you, Ms. Alice Lee, marry me?"
You still remember how scared he was to ask you these words, his hands were even shaking as he proposed. Yet you willingly gave him your 'yes' without hesitation.
And yet here you were, still a bachelorette, with no intentions of falling in love ever again.
You were the perfect daughter — home-schooled with perfect grades, obedient and perfectly poised. A rather boring type of girl as Seungcheol would tease you back then.
However, all that changed when they sent you to a real school — a school with actual people other than your tutor. And that's where you met Seungcheol, Toby as you would call him.
Your 7th grade crush turned into your boyfriend by 8th grade, thanks to that letter he snuck into your locker that one day.
You and Toby kept your relationship a secret from your parents for years. It was you two against the world, or atleast that's how it felt.
Because of him you became adventurous, outgoing, spontaneous — you learned that there's a reality outside of your own home.
So when they finally found out, they had set for you to leave for the States and remain there, just like that. And seemingly unfortunate for you, it was the same day he proposed to you.
You immediately called Toby later that night, asking for him to come pick you up and help you runaway from your parents. But it was to no avail, as Toby consistently declined your request.
Dumbfounded, you threw your engagement ring and cried as you packed your suitcases. You cursed him, and promised that you will never love a man like him ever again. And luckily for you, moving to the US meant you could start a new life, far away from him.

You sighed as you continued to walk through Brooklyn's busy streets, stopping in front of your favorite coffee shop. To your surprise, the cafe was rather packed, and so you simply decided that you'd take out your coffee and spend your time in the nearby park.
"I'll have a large cafe latte, to go, for Ali." You say with a smile as the cashier punched in your order.
However, as soon as you handed in your payment, the cashier told you your order has already been paid for by the customer who came before you. Your mood lightened up, as such a random act of kindness immediately made your heart feel a little softer.
"Are they still inside the cafe? I'd like to extend my thanks."
The cashier smiled and pointed at the male seated near the window who was busy reading the newspaper. You thought if he seemed decent enough, you might consider keeping him company today as a thank you — knowing he had the last empty chair in the cafe in front of him.
"Thank you." you mouthed as you got your order.
With a few deep breaths, you approached the young male, who seemed awfully familiar.
"Hi, I just wanted to say thank you, for paying for my drink. It lightened up my mood today." you said with a smile.
"I'm sorry." the male muttered softly.
"Excuse me, what?"
"I'm sorry, Ali." the male said, his face still a great mystery to you.
"I don't recall telling you my name."
"Ali, it's me. Toby." he said as he slowly faced you.
You were in a state of shock, not knowing how to act, how to respond, and it seems as if your tongue was caught in twists.
He looked amazing, atleast that's what the old Ali would say he was. A tear escaped your eye as you had come face to face after 10 years with the man who broke your heart mercilessly.
"Why are you here, Toby?"
"I looked for you, after you left. I thought you were joking when you said you were leaving."
"Do you think i'm capable of joking about that? I was crying as I talked to you on the phone, Toby."
"I know, I screwed up, and that's why i'm here. To earn your love and your trust once again, Ali." as Toby said those words, he held your hand and looked at your ring finger — hoping he would find his engagement ring right where he wore it on you 10 years ago.
"Well you're 10 years too late, Toby. I don't want anything to do with you now. I trusted you, I thought it would be us against the world. I wanted to runaway with you. I chose you over my own family that day, yet you decided that what I did was nothing but a joke to you." you said in an emotionless tone as you escaped his grasp.
"I don't wanna be rude so i'll leave now. Thank you for the coffee, but it wasn't that pleasing to see you again, especially on a day like this." you said before you walked out on him.
Toby was unsure of what to do, yet he already expected that the worst once he told the cashier that he'd be paying for your order as well.
He looked at you through the window as you crossed the street swiftly, hoping to get away from him as soon as possible.
He sighed as he stared at the empty seat in front of him — the seat he left empty for you, thinking today was his chance to explain to you that he didn't want to leave you that day but he had to.
He didn't treat your call as a joke, in fact he would never treat you as a joke. He loved you that much. But he declined because it was for your future, the future he wasn't sure he could give to you right then and there.
However, now that he had a well-paying job, he migrated to Brooklyn in hopes of crossing paths with you once again and restoring the love he once shattered.
It all just happened too fast, and he felt as if his excitement of seeing you earlier on the street caused him to do things he should've thought more thoroughly before doing.
But just like before, Toby was no quitter. Because right then and there, he promised that he'll do everything to gain you back — whatever it takes.
