"Yeah alright I get it" I say down the phone to the commander "I'll come pick them up in a few hours. No I won't forget" I continue, the stranger was sat on the sofa watching the entire scene, I had been on the phone for the past 30 minuets. Listening to the commander telling me all sorts of details including the fact that I need to disguise my hair as it would give away my identity within seconds, I also needed to pick up the tickets for this masquerade. Finally the commander let me go, I put my phone down and rub my forehead in hopes of soothing the buzzing in my brain. "what are you going to do about your hair? it's not like you can hide it in any way" the stranger says getting up and walking into the kitchen. "I'm just going to colour the blonde parts purple, it will only be temporary though" I explain falling onto the sofa, my head was spinning, I hadn't been able to sleep for the past few days. I had been having strange night scares, which was very unusual for me. The stranger comes in from the kitchen with a glass of warm blood, he holds the glass out to me and I take it carefully "thanks" I mutter before taking a sip. Bagged blood always had a awful synthetic taste to it, it almost makes me sick half of the time, maybe that's why I was having trouble sleeping recently. The stranger sits on the sofa away from me, I continue to drink the blood "Rhys" he suddenly comes out with, I almost choke. "seeing as we will be working together and it needs to be convincing, you need to know my name" he says, not quite meeting my gaze, I compose myself "right, I see. I suppose that does make it easier, I finally have something I can call you" I continue to drink the best I can. His name does suit him I suppose but I wonder why he was so reluctant to tell me at first.
A few hours later as I said I would, I went and picked up the tickets from the commander, he again commented on my hair and how important it was to blend in. I shrugged it off and left his office. Before I got home, I stopped at one of the shops near my house and looked around. At first I couldn't find what I needed but it turned out I just missed it. I scanned the aisle closely, why was it so difficult to find a matching purple shade, I sighed and just picked one, it didn't matter too much, it wouldn't last too long. I paid and left the shop before heading home.
When I walked in, the stranger I mean Rhys, was not on the sofa where he usually would be. I guess he went upstairs or out, I took my dye and climbed the stairs to the bathroom, closing the door before getting to work. Why is this so messy I wonder as I paint on the purple paint to my blonde streaks, it had smeared on my forehead, ears and neck, it had also found it's way onto my white bathroom sink and floor. Once I had finished putting it on, I cleaned off my skin as well as everywhere else it had gotten. I put a timer on and went to get something to eat.
I didn't quite look the same now, I had washed my hair and dried it. My curls sprung up randomly but they all looked the same, I had never seen my hair all the same colour before, it was strange. As I was looking at my hair change, I heard my front door open and slam shut before silence fell over my house. Cautiously I walk down the stairs, Rhys was slumped against the door on the floor. I hurry down the rest of the stairs, calling his name in a panic as I had never seen this happen to him before, he didn't stir. I kneel down on the floor beside him, I reach out to shake him, he felt ice cold even though it was a warm day. I shake him more vigorously and call his name again, I press my fingers against his neck, he had the faintest trace of a pulse. I rise to my feet and try to pull him over to the sofa away from the door, as I pull I feel his grip on my wrist. His eyes begin to open but something wasn't right about his gaze. His normally ice blue eyes had changed, his left eye was completely black whereas his right eye was red. A telltale sign of him being a half breed like me, the red symbolised a hungry vampire but the black showed something much more dangerous. I try to step back but his grip tightened until I dropped down to my knees, he grips my shoulders tight, his head resting on one of them. Hot breath tickled my neck making my hair stand on end, his breathing sounded rough from his struggle. I try to push him off so that I could get him sorted out but before I could even blink, a sharp feeling ripped through my neck. He had bitten me, I could feel my blood being stolen, hear it being devoured hungrily. My body felt numb, too tired to fight him off, how pitiful of me, unable to fend off an attack from another of my kind. It felt like hours but the few minuets passed by, in this time my eyes had closed.
I wake up feeling tired and drained, I sit up slowly and look around. I was in my bedroom, Rhys was sitting on the end of my bed with a glass in his hand, he looked normal again but he wouldn't look me in the eye "here" he says holding the glass out to me, I take it cautiously and drink its contents. Rhys still wouldn't look at me, I finish with the glass and he takes it from me, trying to get away as quickly as possible "hold on a second" I say starting to get up, he already left the room. I quickly follow him, he was pulling on his jacket about to leave the house. I practically fly down the stairs and slam my hands against the door, trapping him inside. "I know that you're a half breed" I blurt out without thinking. He stops "listen I think its best if I go now and leave you alone, I shouldn't have done what I did" he explains finally looking at me. I grab hold of the front of his jacket and look him straight in the eye "I don't care, the least you can do is explain why you haven't told me anything and why you are here" I snarl. He looks to the side avoiding my glare. "I come from the underworld, my father is a full demon and the king of the underworld, he had captured my mother as she was a vampire spy from the royal vampire family. During her imprisonment, she fell pregnant with me as my father forced it upon her. She gave birth to me in the underworld but was killed after I was born as she had passed vampire genetics on to me. My father raised me but wanted me to take the throne, I refused because he wanted me to join the demon race and the dark fae through an arranged marriage to their princess. I was disowned from the family for of my defiance, my father's son from another woman took my place. I hate what my parents did to me, they made me a half royal demon and half a royal vampire" he explained before going quiet. I let go of his jacket, my mind racing to try and process this new information. "then that means" I stare at him and take a few trembling steps back "you're the true king to the two most powerful races in the world" I splutter, Rhys says nothing in response but slowly nods. This is going to be more complicated then I first thought.
