08. Bullfighting and Interrogating
Lilly
"Whoa, this place is great!" Bert exclaimed.
"You said that already. More than three times, actually," I replied as coldly as I could, narrowing my eyes at him. But he didn't notice. He was too busy staring outside.
We had finally arrived in Spain after a solid twenty-four-hour-long voyage. As of now, the three of us were in a coach, while Karim drove. We passed plenty of of green, open fields, farms, and hills. I would have found it beautiful, only if I wasn't so busy thinking about Ellie.
What's she doing right now? Hopefully she at and slept alright last night. What if she was driving Mina and Ella bonkers? Was she... missing me? Was she missing us?
"We have arrived," a cool voice interrupted my thoughts.
"We have? Where--oh."
I observed the rather large, white stucco-clad house sitting in the midst of a green, grassy field. A long, winding dirt path led to the entrance. A barbed wire fence surrounded the field, and I noticed several cows and bulls grazing.
"A ranch? You have a ranch?" I asked, turning towards Mr Ambrose.
"Indeed, Mr Linton."
"Why?"
"It's quite profitable. Specifically here in Spain," he replied, "Or, perhaps, would you rather sleep in the mine?"
I threw him a look. "Not a chance in hell."
"Adequate. Let's go."
Picking up my small, but rather heavy suitcase, I followed Mr Ambrose towards the door. He knocked. Nobody replied.
"Somebody lives here?" I hissed.
"Indeed, Mr Linton." was the cool reply.
"Who?"
"The rancher. And some workers who come here often."
Mr Ambrose knocked again.
"Yo voy! Yo voy!" a hoarse, feminine voice came from inside.
A moment later, the door opened, revealing a black-haired, middle-aged woman. Her eyes widened in shock when she saw Mr Ambrose.
"Oh, Señor! Bienvenidos! Come in!" the woman exclaimed, stepping back and curtsying.
Mr Ambrose gave her a curt nod, then he strode inside. I followed him.
The inside of the house was spotless and spacious. The walls were bare and there were no decorations, just as Mr Ambrose would like it.
"Señores, I take you to your rooms, sí?" the maid asked.
"Very well," Mr Ambrose responded, curtly.
The maid nodded, then gestured for us to follow her. She led us to our rooms. There was one for Karim, one for Bert, one for Mr Ambrose, and one for me.
They must have given us an extra, unnecessary room. But I didn't mention that.
I learned that the maid's name was Nina. She was really quite nice. She made us dinner--a traditional, delicious Spanish meal made out of eggs, potatoes, and onions.
"Nina," I called, my mouth full of Spanish omelette, which earned me a cold look from my husband, "this is really good!"
Nina smiled brightly. "Gracias. Thank you, Señor."
