I walk a few block down the street, trying really hard not to look suspicious, avoiding security guards or any psychiatrist. Once I'm really far away and the view of that horrible building is now a fading memory, I start to feel my stomach grumbling.
I look around in an attempt to find a nice place to eat, when I spot a group of teenagers laughing and goofing around. My eyes follow them and I notice that they enter a small cafeteria on the corner at the end of the street. I search inside my jeans in an attempt to find money. Besides my home keys, I found ten dollars. I guess that's enough to get some water and a sandwich, at least. I walk down the street, and open the cafeteria's door. A bell ring up in my head and everyone stares at me for several seconds and go back to their food afterwards, normal. I go tot he end of the line, approximetely 8 people in row, I think I can wait without actually starving. I stare at the menu attached in the wall and decide on what I can have. After a battle in between a turkey sandwich and some fries, I decide to go with the sanwdwich and some water. The line doesn't seem to be moving anytime soon, so I start to look around at the tables and people surrounding me. I spot the group of friends I saw earlier sitting beside a window, laughing and taking some pictures. They're 3 girls and 2 boys, but one sit is empty.
"Hi", I hear a voice at my back. I turn around and notice a tall, dark haired guy, with big, blue eyes and a blinding smile.
"Hi", I reply back, my shy self showing off.
"How are you?", he asks, as he moves one step further, as the line is finally starting to move.
Can I be honest with him, or should I give him a cold-hearted answer?
"Fine", is all that I manage to get out of my mouth. I'm not used to having strangers talking to me.
"What are you having on this lovely morning?", he asks, imitating a waitress. I giggle.
"Uhm, just a turkey sandwich and water", I reply, staring at my feet.
"Oh, I see", he replies, awkwardlly.
I look up at him and give him a weak smile."And... you are here all alone?", he asks, as he moves a step further.
"Yeah, why...?", I doubtfully ask."Curiosity", he replies and turns around.
"Good talk", I say to myself.
The line starts moving faster. The guy that spoke to me earlier orders a cheese hamburger and three sodas. He leaves the counter with his order and doesn't even look back at me. Whatever.
I approach to the counter and tell the cashier what I want and give her the only money I have with me. After a few minutes, my order arrives. A weak "thank you" comes out from my mouthand I turn around, in an absurb attempt to find an empty table in which I can eat, since all of the tables are occupied. I start to get anxious and desperately considering to eat on the floor, or even the bathroom. After a few seconds of desperation and panic, I listen an annoyed voice, "get out of the way!", a lady around her forties pushes past me. "Sorry", I reply, trying really hard to not cry.
"Hey! Come here!", I hear a familiar voice not so far away from me. Something tells me to look at that person and I do. It's the guy from earlier, waving at me, sitting with the group at the window. He smiles and directs me to come closer, while his friends watch me with an oblivious face. I wonder what my expression looks like: terrified? lonely? sad? desperate? I don't know, but I know it's not a friendly one. I start walking, slowly, but something inside me tells me that I should go with them, that I have to.
Once I arrive to the table that a few minutes ago was full with laughter and fun, the blue eyed guy stands up, offering me his chair, "you can sit with us", he says and goes away. I stare at his friends, scared. No one says a things, no one blonks, they're all just staring at me, scanning every living cell in me. "Hi", a blond girl sitting right beside the window says, and gives me a warm smile. I don't know what to do, so I just stare down at my feet. The blue eyed guy comes back with another chair, places it in an empty space, and sits down.
"So, what are you waiting for?", he taps the chair besides him, ordering me to sit.
I set my tray on the table and follow his order. I don't look up and just stare at my sandwich. After approximately 5 seconds of awkward silence, the group of friends start to laugh again, ignoring my existence.
"Literal goals", a curly, brunette girls laughs and takes a sip of her iced tea.
Once they have all stopped laughing, they direct all eyes to me, again.
"So, what's your name?",the blue eyes stare at me, expecting my answer-
"Clementine", I say, in the most confident voice I can manage to get out.
"Nice, my name is Matthew, or Matt, for friends", he winks, "introduce yourselves guys", he orders to his friends.
"I'm Claire", the blond girl from earlier says, while finishing her fries.
"I'm Macie", the brunette smiles. She seems friendly, I hope I'm not wrong
"My name is Jared, Jc for friends, please don't ask why", a brunette guy with almond colored eyes says, and everyone at the table starts laughing, while I just smile.
"I'm Benjamin, Ben for short", a curly, blond guy says, without looking at me, focusing on his food. No words."And I'm Anne", a girl with, long, straight, light pink hair says and smiles at me. She looks really nice and cute
"So, why are you all alone?", Matthew asks, as I look back at him, scared. He looks back at me and his smile fades away.
"I feel like I shouldn't have asked that. It's okay if you don't want to talk about it", he pats my shoulder. I nod and take a bite into my sandwich.
"Yeah, don't worry", Macie smiles at me.
"You look like a person that needs of people like us", Jared says. What does that mean?
"Wh-what do you...mean?", I asked, unsure if I want to know.
Matthew giggles,"he means that you look like a shy girl, that need to have fun and ou know, just chill.", he gives me a reassuring look and I just smile.
"I'm no fun. I'm not a nice girl to be around", I regret saying those words once they come out of my mouth. Cool, now they will hate me and be scared of me.
"Oh, I bet you are!", Anne exclaims and holds my hand, "don't think of yourself like that", she smiles and everyone in the table agrees with her.
"Let's do one thing", Matthew begins, "eat that fast, most of us are almost done, you are coming with us afterwards, wheather you want to or not, you'll try new things. You'll discover how fun you can be and-",
I cut him off, "why are you doing this?", I whisper.
He leans onto me and approaches my ear, "because I have to", he whispers. I feel him smile.
