redshift refers to the stretching of waves, in this case it's light, due to the source moving away from the detector. and since it is stretched, it is getting longer and longer and longer waves are red, hence the name redshift. this redshift has been detected from every galaxy (i'm not sure if even stars) meaning everything is moving away from us.
