poppy practically jumped at the sound of branch's voice coming from her door.

"you're ruining our friendship?" he had asked.

he must have heard her talking to herself.

"branch!" she screeched, forcing a smile onto her face. "what are..what are you doing here?"

"i came to see if you needed any help preparing for tonight, but it seems i came in at the wrong time." annoyed, branch began to storm out of poppy's pod.

"wait!" poppy grabbed his hand and pulled him back inside. "how much of that did you hear?"

"enough to know what you are thinking deep down." branch paused. "if you didn't want to be my friend, why did you pretend in the first place? it would've hurt a lot less than this."

"branch, i..you've got it all wrong," she began.

branch folded his arms. "oh, do i? so why exactly were you talking to yourself about ruining our friendship, hmm?"

"i..i..i wasn't talking about you," poppy lied. she practically winced at the fact that she had just lied. she never lied!

"poppy, if you're going to lie, at least make it believable."

"branch! why would i ever want to ruin our friendship? we've come such a long way and our friendship is the most important thing to me. you know this!"

"do i?" branch snapped.

and with that, he stormed out of her pod, anger filling him.

poppy sighed, annoyed at herself. not only had she just lied to her best friend, but she had also probably ruined the most important friendship she had.

"poppy?" a voice asked from behind a closed door. hopeful, poppy raced to the door, only to find her dad.

"oh." disappointment hit her like a rock. "hi dad."

"hey, sweetie! it's your big night and i thought i'd give you a big, warm hug to start your day off with some positive vibes!" hugging his daughter, the king smiled.

poppy didn't hug him back. she didn't have the energy to.

"honey? what's wrong?"

"nothing," poppy assured him, forcing her second smile of the day. "i'll see you tonight, okay?"

"okay sweetie. i love you."

"i love you more, dad."
