poppy feeling the flowers being dropped at her feet before branch began to kiss her back, only to pull away immediately.
looking down, branch felt as though he had crossed a line.
"what's wrong?" poppy asked, not letting go of his face.
"i..i don't..."
pulling her hand away from his face, poppy took a step back from him and frowned. she was the one who had crossed a line.
"i'm sorry. i..i don't know what i was thinking."
branch pulled her back in, this time cupping her face as they kissed. surprised, poppy melted into the kiss and smiled.
they pulled away, and branch looked down at his feet and found the once put together flowers sprawled out all of the floor. laughing, they both picked them up.
"i was planning on working up the courage to come to your party and give you these, after my apology. which, i guess, also explains the suit."
"i like it. you look really cute in it," poppy giggled, putting the last flower back into the bag. "why didn't you have the courage to come to my party? i was looking for you forever."
"i was worried you'd be mad at me for lashing out on you," branch admitted. "i didn't want to ruin your big night."
"are you kidding? you made it ten times better than it ever could have been," she smiled, leaning in to kiss him once again before glancing over to realize someone was standing at her door, watching her.
"dad?" she asked, pulling away from branch in shock. "what are you..what are you doing here?"
"i came here with medicine for your stomach ache." he held up a bottle of pepto. "but it seems you've got yourself taken care of."
"dad, i can explain."
"go ahead then. explain."
sighing, poppy looked at branch, feeling guilty for lying to her dad. "it's a long story."
"i've got time."
***
"that still doesn't explain why you two were making out while you're supposed to be at the biggest party of your entire life," peppy said angrily after poppy had finished her story.
"we weren't making out-"
"i don't need to hear your excuses. explain to me why you two hooking up is more important than your coronation?"
"maybe because my love life is more important to me than a stupid crown!" poppy yelled and took a step forward toward her dad. she took the crown off of her head and slammed it against the ground, small jewels falling off of it.
behind her, branch couldn't help but gasp at her sudden behavior.
"who do you think you are?" peppy shrieked, staring at the crown. "do you realize how much history that has?!"
"does it look like i care?!" poppy screamed. even she was surprised at her sudden aggression, but she was too fired up to even think strait. who did he think he was walking in on her and branch kissing and going off on her?!
"you would care if you had known your mother wore than before she died!"
gasping, poppy took a step back into branch's arms. what?
"dad, i..i had no idea-"
"of course you didn't, poppy! you never know what you're going to get yourself into! you don't listen to others, the only person you care to listen to is yourself! i see it, your friends see it, even branch sees it! you do what you want to do and don't listen to anyone else! and now you've just destroyed the last piece i had of your mother, you moron!"
and with that, king peppy stormed off, slamming her door as loudly as he possibly could.
stepping away from branch, poppy stared at the wall in fury.
"poppy, i-"
"get out."
"but i-"
"GET OUT!!!!" poppy screamed, loud enough for the entire village to hear.
taken aback, branch scrambled to pull himself together before walking out of her door, only to find the entire village looking at him with fearful eyes.
"go home, everyone," he told the crowd. "mind your own business."
and with that, branch stormed off to his bunker, angry now filling him too.
