Hi my lovelies. I hate that I haven't updated in so long, I'm so sorry! Life has been a messy situation! But I hope y'all enjoy this new chapter. It's a doozie. I hope to continue updating since I don't have as much school work due to what's happening in the world right now! I love you guys and I can't wait for your feedback! It had been a month since Winter and Harry fought about what he constantly nagged to Lillian about her. A month since Harry rehired Lillian to save his name. A month since Winter kept having reoccurring thoughts about Harry calling her out for being a terrible wife. Well, not him calling her out for it but him getting caught.
Winter was quietly grocery shopping, an unamused look on her face. She had been shopping at this same grocery market since she lived here — basically her whole life. Winter quietly walked alongside the fresh produce when she heard the familiar voice call her name. "Well if it isn't old Winter Hollis," she knew it was someone who hadn't seen her since she had been married.
Winter faked her best smile as she met eyes with her old high school sweetheart. They dated from ninth to the end of eleventh grade. "Well if it isn't you, Luke," she smiled as she walked over and gave him a quick hug, looking down at the little boy at his feet. "Who is this?" She smiled at him.
"This is my son Sullivan," he smiled at her. She looked at the small child. He couldn't have been more than four years old. She looked back up at Luke.
"He's beautiful, he looks just like you," she smiled softly at him. "How've you been, I haven't seen you since we graduated," he looked so happy. This drove her crazy on the inside. Why couldn't she be this happy?
"I've been great, I found the love of my life, we got married while we were in college. We've been married for 6 years now. We have twin girls that are two and this big guy who is four," he picked Sullivan up. "What about you," he asked politely.
"Oh you know, same old same old. I married Harry, we've been doing good, we've been married for about seven years. It's just the two of us, life's been amazing" she always felt the need to lie so people wouldn't ask more questions and get too close to her to realize she was actually miserable.
"No children? That's so surprising. When we dated back in high school you never stopped talking about how you wanted to be a mother, but you married your high school crush. That's amazing. I guess we all knew. Some things just never change" he stressed. Well that's not what you say to someone when you don't know if they're having a complicated time trying to conceive. But he didn't know that and she was always the person that was too nice.
Winter tried to hide the pain on her face as she shook her head. "No, we just haven't gotten around to that yet," she pulled a smile. "Anyway, it was great seeing you Luke, have a good day," she walked past him with her shopping cart, finishing her shopping so she could just go home. She knew she had four or five more stops to make, but those could wait. She needed to get home so she could take a nap or clear her head with a bottle of wine.
Once finished with her shopping, she brought the groceries to the car. She smiled at a small girl walking with her mother past the car before climbing in and driving home.
As she got home, she noticed Harry's car was here. He must have been working from home. Nothing new, he did that sometimes. She quietly pushed open the door, walking to his office to tell him she was home. He wasn't in there, which was weird, but Winter started pushing the groceries away.
After, she got on her phone to message him but realized it was on ten percent and went upstairs to grab her charger. As she opened the door, she felt as if all of the oxygen left her body. She looked quietly at Harry and Lillian in the bed together. She backed up quietly and hit the table that was in the hallway across from their room. This caused Harry and Lillian to look up.
Winter started walking away at a quick pace before Harry shot up, placing his underwear on as he quickly followed behind her. "Baby, baby, it's not what you think. I swear," Harry followed behind her.
"Winter, listen to m—" winter turned around and stared at him.
"Harry, what do you mean it's not what I think, if it's not what I think, then please explain it to me."
He looked down, knowing he had been caught once again. "I'm going out, I can't deal with this. I have to go," winter was rushed, but she placed her phone in her purse and grabbed her jacket. She opened the door slamming it behind her before Harry could even catch up.
I guess some things don't ever change.
Winter quietly drove down main street of their small town. This was what her life had come to. She forgave and forgave until she couldn't stand looking at her reflection or the man she was supposed to love to the ends of the earth.
Winter had nobody to turn to, nobody to call. So she did what most people would and drove to the local park.
Sitting in the grass, she stared out at the pond. A numbing pain had taken over her body. Winter didn't feel the urge to cry, she wasn't sad. She felt nothing.
Winter sat there as the sun went down and was still there by the time the sun came up. When it was about 8:00, she got in her car and drove back to the house. Harry was at work so winter had nothing to worry about. She plugged her phone in to charge and waited for it to turn back on from being completely dead.
For about a minute straight she heard dings going off from messages. She let them completely stop before she looked at her phone. A long message thread came from Harry as well as twenty voicemail messages. They all had the same underlying message "I screwed up. I'm sorry. Please don't do anything stupid. I love you."
Winter went to the guest bedroom and fell asleep for what felt like a few minutes. Once she awoke from her nap, she took a shower, brushed her hair, did her makeup, and just stared at her reflection for what seemed like forever.
At around 4:00, she started preparing dinner for Harry. She noticed she hadn't eaten in a whole day. But she didn't feel the urge to eat. As she was finishing up dinner, Harry darted through the front door.
"Winnie, where have you been?! You've had me worried sick."
Winter faked a smile and placed a plate with grilled chicken, broccoli, and a side of pasta. "I just went on a drive to clear my head. If you need anything from me I'll be upstairs." She kissed his cheek and walked past him.
Winter knew she couldn't get out of this sad life, so she just decided to ignore everything. She would make it out alive. Maybe.
