Albatros was the first Animus introduced in WOF. He manifested these powers as a royal. The animus gift can only manifest in the royal bloodline, as shown with Jerboa who was the last of the Sandwing animus.
It travels by bloodline, Albatross has 2 grandchildren Prince Fathom and Princess Pearl. Since the Great Royal Massacre, Fathom was not allowed to have children. But the animus gift would have continued on even if they killed Fathom. Pearl shared Fathom's blood. One animus was only born every one generation or more . Which is why they are so rare. But the sea wings had two, Orca and Turtle. The reason is Gill was royal.
Yes, King Gill husband of Queen Coral was royal and a descendant of an animus. Remember Fathom had 3 children, of course no one knew, not even Gill knew. By having two dragon with royal blood, with animus blood, their offspring will have a higher chance of being an animus. Because they were royal they had an animus child without fail, Orca. But we all know what happened to her. Later on Turtle came into the picture as an animus as well. And they had lost at least 20 daughters to the animus statue, that Orca made. Which means they could have had many more animus children. Also Orca was not the first animus since Fathom, there was a unnamed princess who was animus as told by Jerboa (yes she was older than darkstalker).
The Icewings have proven my theory correct. Because they did not let the animus leave their royal bloodline, until Prince Arctic. They had animus in every generation but only one per generation. Because not everyone had the animus gift in the early Icewing royal bloodline. But the Icewings, when they lost Prince Arctic, they lost the gift. This is because the last owner of the animus gift Queen Diamond did not remarry or have anymore eggs. This would have given the Icewings back the animus gift. But they did not know it would work that way. The Nightwings could have manifested the Animus power as well. In my knowledge there were originally 2 animus some Icewing and a Skywing but who knows. Albatross was Seawing/Icewing hybrid, got his power from his Icewing lineage. Jerboa might have been half Sandwing/Icewing they share a border and the Icewings has had the animus power for who knows how long. Prince Arctic only had one animus child because Foeslayer has some royal blood in her. Foeslayer has a distant connection to the throne of the Nightwings, but she had no need to take the throne because there were others in line for the throne.
The Skywing have the animus gift because they can't get rid of it. They mention it in Darkstalker. Where a Skywing Princess and her escort mention that they get rid of the monsters after they hatch. But this does not stop the gift. As it mentions through out WOF that they keep getting rid of the "abominations" such as firescales and animus. Queen Scarlet must have animus blood, as well as Queen Ruby/Tourmaline, as well as every Skywing from that bloodline.
This also solves the issue of the Sandwings and Mudwings. The Mudwing if they ever had the gift they lost it when they had no heirs. Meaning they had no royal blood to produce animus because that queen out lived her sibs who died without eggs . The Sandwings lost their royal bloodline when they had a bad queen. The eye of onyx chose a new queen for the Sandwings, therefore destroying the animus bloodline in the Sandwings kingdom. Jerboa the last known animus from the sandwings had a daughter, animus made but a daughter none the less.
Princess Sunny has animus blood from her father, Stonemover. If she marries a male sand wing with royal blood from Queen Scorpion's bloodline (dont forget only females rule their tribes, yes idc call me a simp i dare you), the brothers of the last royal from Jerboas time had children of their own) they should be able to produce a animus. That means an animus is only produced when 2 royals mate and have an offspring, as long as one of the parents has animus blood one of their children will be an animus.
Stonemover had royal parents, in order to be a animus. We all know Darkstalker's sister Whiteout marries and has children. Whiteout had animus blood. Her descendant would be Stonemover, on top of that there was a queen in the Nightwing Kingdom already who also has children. Eventually one of Whiteout's descendants would marry a Nightwing with royal lineage. And her granddaughter was a animus and her (the grand daughter) great grandson was also an animus.
