Summer, 1997

MINJI

I peered out of the window, taking in the summer breeze. I watched the waves crashing against each other as we drove past the refreshing scenery.

"Minji, be careful, you might fall out of the window." My grandfather said. He tended to be cautious about me, since the only family we had was each other. I couldn't blame him, it never really hurt to be careful, especially after what happened to my parents. I was only three years old, but I had my ways of knowing the truth.

"Grandpa, are we there yet? I can't wait any longer." I groaned. I could only enjoy myself during the summer, when Grandpa wasn't busy and he had time for me.

Grandpa owned the company that was originally supposed to be run by my father, until he passed. Because of the unexpected accident, Grandpa had to continue running the company himself, which was why he almost rarely had any time for me at all. But I understood why he had to work all the time; it was all for me. I knew that one day I'll be taking his place as the successor of the company. If only I had been born earlier, maybe Grandpa would have retired by now.

"Patience, dear. We're almost there, just wait for half an hour." he replied. I could never understand Grandpa's tolerance for my nagging. Maybe it was because I was merely a child.

I stayed quiet and continued to gaze at the ocean with my chin resting on the open window.

I didn't even realize that I had dozed off until I felt someone lightly tap my shoulder.

"Miss Minji, wake up. We've arrived." Sebastian, my grandfather's secretary, woke me up.

I rubbed my eyes and looked around to see that we were already here at the beach house we owned. It was settled exactly next to the ocean, at the edge of a tiny cliff. It was the perfect scene at sunset, and in turn had the most beautiful view of the sunrise, one of the things I liked about coming there.

I excitedly got out of the car and took a deep breath, inhaling the salty but nostalgic scent of the ocean.

After we settled in, Grandpa wanted to eat lunch outside by the shore.

While waiting for the meal to be prepared, I decided to stroll around the beach to fend off my boredom, and hopefully to find some seashells to bring home. Sebastian accompanied me. It made me realize that he was more of a bodyguard to me than he was my grandfather's secretary.

Just as I was about to reach down for some of the small shells I had spotted in the sand, I heard a yell from the distance.

I looked up and saw a boy struggling to swim in the water, he was flailing his arms around screaming for help. "Stay here, young lady!" Sebastian was quick to react; I didn't even have to say anything before he took off his flannel shirt and ran towards the boy.

Sebastian dove into the ocean, doing his best to rescue the drowing kid as fast as he could although the waves that tried to push him back to shore made it difficult to continue swimming forward.
