Ari frantically knocked the door again. Eleanor stood behind her, preoccupied with the phone in her hand. Eventually, a kind face appeared in the doorway.
"Oh! Hello, girls! Are you alright?" Mrs Ciel sounded incredibly distracted. Her long chestnut hair was tied into a rushed bun and her eyes look slightly puffy from crying.
"We're okay. Sorry to bother you. We actually came to see if you were okay - I suppose you saw the news then, huh?" Eleanor said quietly, walking into Jupiter's parents' apartment. It was an astonishingly lavish apartment, with modern glass windows stretching across an entire wall, giving an extraordinary view of central Ninjago City. Inside, all the furniture fitted a calm colour scheme, from the kitchen to the living room.
Jupiter's mother gave the two girls a small smile of gratitude. She paced around the kitchen in deep thought whilst the two teenagers loitered in the living room. The huge TV was left on, with Gayle Gossip covering the latest news story. Ari stared blankly at the flashing words on the screen:
'Lilac Ninja Suddenly Missing'
'Mysterious Disappearance After Studio Attack'
'Missing Ninja: Fans Devastated'
"Would you girls like something to eat? Or drink?" Mrs Ciel asked. It was clear to them that she was trying her hardest to keep it together. Of course, it's not easy for any parent when their child suddenly decides they want to go be a ninja; anything could happen. Like going missing.
"No, no, Mrs Ciel - Don't trouble yourself! We already had something at Chen's Noodle House."
Eleanor, who was sat on a comfy seat, stood up and put a hand on Ari's shoulder.
"She's strong - I'm sure she'll be back." She whispered. At that moment, Mrs Ciel came back from her endless pacing in the kitchen and sat on an armchair in the living room. She put her head in her hands and closed her eyes.
"I can't believe I let her expose her powers - now she's a ninja and then this happens and I'm getting calls from new stations everywhere--" , She exhaled shakily as a tear fell from her tired eyes. Ari and Eleanor immediately went to comfort her; Jupiter's mother was like their second-mother, having been friends with each others' families for such a long time.
"Thank you, girls - Jupiter is lucky to have you two. I should check up on her father- he's been in a call for quite a while." The woman slowly stood up from the chair and walked down the hall to find her husband. Ari and Eleanor sat back down quietly. In the streets below the high-rise apartment, cars were speeding past loudly under the illuminating lights of the city.
"We have to find them." Ari said with a small crack in her voice.
"Them?" Eleanor looked at her best friend. She was clutching her phone, desperately updating her news app continuously.
"Jupiter and Hector. Eleanor, TWO of our closest friends are missing! We can't just stand here sulking! If the ninja and the Police Department won't help, then we do it ourselves." Ari's hands were clenched into fists.
Eleanor's face was painted with uncertainty - she was a studious person who cared about what she was doing now to benefit her academic future. Going an adventure was not particularly on her schedule.
"Eleanor, come on!" Her best friend pleaded.
After a silence filled with hesitation, Eleanor firmly nodded her head.
"Let's go find our friends."
