Sam POV
We ventured outside exploring the new surroundings that we would be in for the next three weeks. Seeing a bunch of cabins and a couple buildings for activities and meet ups. We walked around for a bit, I was getting bored, it was the same stuff just cabins and buildings we couldn't go in.
"Hey do you wanna go off trail? I know the camp lady said not to, but it would be fun." I asked.
"I mean, do you have your phone? I don't want to get lost."
"Yeah, it's at 70% too." I said hoping she would say yes.
"Then sure why not." She said smiling at me.
"HECK YEAH!!" I exclaimed. "So how did u find this camp anyways?" I asked as we walked along a nice grassy path.
"Well my mom found it one day and wanted me to go, so she wouldn't have to deal with me at home."
"Oh, that sucks. If you don't mind me asking why didn't she want to 'deal' with you?"
"Oh well, my mom has a good job that pays well, but that means she works almost constantly, never having time to even take a lunch break, much less take care of her kid. So I guess she thought this could help her out for a couple weeks. But having her as a mom isn't all that great she has a really high expectation and I'm supposed to meet and go beyond that expectation every day. So that means I can only wear certain clothes, act a specific way, and never be "out of line." Don't get me wrong I love her it's just- Sorry I'm rambling aren't I."
"No, no, it's ok. you shouldn't be held to that certain standard. You should be excepted to be you and only you." For a split second it felt as if I was talking to a friend from back home.
"You know, my first impressions of you where this stuck up, know-it-all who was rich with practically no flaws, or cares, I was genuinely convinced this was going to be a living hell for me, but I'm really glad it's not going to be, for once I'm excited for this silly camp, Alex." Wow, I never thought I would say that. Me? Actually exited for a camp? I'm glad it's not gonna be crap.
"Wait, did you say Alex?" She genuinely sounded confused I thought that was her name. Oh shit, did I mess up her name and say a name of someone she hates?? Oh god I ruined a perfect moment.
"I'm so sorry! Is that not your name? I thought you said your name was Alex. I swear I'm not trying to be a dick, I genuinely thought it was your name, I remember you saying it wa-"
"It is, don't worry. it's my preferred nickname. I'm just so used to people calling me by my normal name, it was actually nice" she slightly smirked
"Oh thank god, I got so worried that I ruined a moment there."  I giggled in embarrassment. "I really like you nickname though, how did you come up with it?"
"Oh, well it's only a letter off from my real name but it just feels like it suits me better."
"Oh cool, so, not to intrude, but you said your mom holds you to a specific standard and from what you told me she doesn't seem to like when things don't go her way, but does she use your nickname if she values control that much?"
"Well I've mentioned it to her once and it didn't go so well..." she trailed off looking at the flowers and tall grass we were strolling through.
"How so?" Is asked interrupting her gaze
"Well she kind of just gave me a look told me 'don't be silly', then gave me a lecture about her standers and how I have to go beyond them, or else she's going to have another "talk" with me but next time it won't be that...civil... sorry I'm just unloading everything onto you" she embarrassedly said
"No, it's ok, I promise. I'm the one who's prying for information."
"So tell me something about you." She curiously said "What are your hobbies, what's your family like, any pets, do you have a nickname?"
"Umm well," that's a lot of questions in one sentence. "Well ok, hobbies, I like to listen to music or hangout with my friends, I don't have any pets, and my nickname is Sam, my real name is Samantha but I really hate it so I shortened it."
"Oh that's cool, Sam is a nice name." That made me smirk I'm actually, glad she likes it. " but you never said what your family is like, have any siblings?"
"Well I have a brother but he already moved out. As for my parents umm...don't get me wrong I love them obviously, but I just don't agree with a lot of their views."
"Oh," she paused thinking about what to say next "If you don't mind me asking, what type views are you talking about?"
At this point I'm not sure if I want to tell her, what if she's homophobic too and then the rest of the camp will actually be a living hell... On the other hand she has opened up a lot in the past couple minutes, and told me a lot about herself, so maybe I'll just take a leap of faith. Shit am I'm actually doing this-
"Well you know how I said my mom doesn't like my friends, and sends me to these camps for me to make 'better ones' well it because there part of the LGBTQ+ community." Oh god, oh god, oh god. I jumped off the figurative cliff into the deep abyss of possible reactions she might have, hopefully it won't be harsh.
"Oh my god, that is horrible, no parent should ever judge their kids friends like that. Sending you to summer camps to get different ones is just plain out curule."
Thank god she isn't homophobic that was one of the most nerve racking things I've done in a while.
"Yeah....by the way, I'm sorry I was such a jerk to you when we first met. I just don't want to let my mom get the satisfaction of her 'plans' working."
"It's completely ok, at first I was confused but I'm glad you told me why you were so protective of you personal life. Oh and also if you don't want to be frie-"
"No! I do want to be friends, just because I'm friends with you doesn't mean I have to drop my other ones, like she wants me too."
"I'm really glad you said that, I was going to be really sad if you didn't want to be friends." She giggled to her self.
"Oh shiit- when does the first thing start again? it's already 5:47"
"Oh god, we gotta go! it starts at 6 and I don't know how long it's going to take to get back to camp."
We both start running back trying to remember which ways we went to get back to the camp I look back at my phone
-5:53
We keep running past the trees and flower patches to eventually make it out to a familiar place.
"Oh I can see the cabins and the cafeteria!" Alex said a little ways ahead of me. "What time is it?"
"5:55! We've got to hurry the auditorium is still way over there!"
We finely get there after running for an eternity, opening the doors at 5:59. Technically not late.
I see the camp lady slowly and ominously approach us,
"...Girls, we need to talk..."
