Chapter 9

I can't be out every night
No one's holdin' me
I can't do just what I like

But I can't fall in love without you
I can't fall in love without you

Flashback continues.

3 years later.

"Jungkook! Not yet" Haseol protested "Wait a bit more"

"But I want cakee" Jungkook whined.

"But we gotta wait until your friends come"

"they will be late, I want cake now!" the birthday boy stomped his feet with a pout.

"well, I have an idea" Haseol said as she winked at the little one.

"Idea?" the five year old batted his eyelids as his curiosity increased.

"Here" she handed him the watch around her wrist. "see this" she pointed towards the hour hand pointing towards 4 "when this reaches 5. We'll have cake, okay?"

Thinking that it won't be a long time he nodded with a smile "Okay!" he grinned and sat for an hour staring at the small ticking machine.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR KOOKIE" everyone sang in unison for the little boy who had just turned 5. With the giggles and colours the happiness flowed into their lives. The young boy with his bunny smile picked up a piece of cake and bought it to his mother's mouth. That's when he heard them, the sirens, those loud sirens. They feel familiar, he turned towards the sound, the world outside his house was burning. He turned back to his parents, their faces looked as if it lost all energy. No expression,no energy, no life. Jungkook bought his hand near his mother's cheek "Mom" he said "why are all your faces like that?" he could feel his eyes become glossy.

That's when he heard a loud explosion, he realized his house was on fire. The flames acting as tentacles pulling everyone into it. Jungkook ran after his family as they were parted from him, he waited for his turn, the fire died. He looked around, nothing but the lonely garden where his birthday party was once held.

He walked with his tiny feet inside the house, it was the same as before. Just a bit more sad, more alone, more in need of love.

"Mom" he called out "MOM WHERE ARE YOU?" he looked into the living room.

"Yes honey" he heard his mom's voice.

"I'm looking for you, where are you?" he tried to make out the direction of the voice.

The voice disappeared.

"MOM?!!" Jungkook let out a cry. "Mom where are you? Please come out!? Dad!! Dad are you with mom? Is Haseol with you? Why did you leave me here?" He felt his heart ache, legs paralysing, voice suppressing, vision blurring as he fell on the ground.

Jungkook's POV:

"JUNGKOOK!! JUNGKOOK!!" I heard someone call out for me as I struggled to open my eyes.
"JUNGKOOK WAKE UP!! I opened my eyes, it was Jihoon. He is my roommate in this orphanage. So I was dreaming.
"W-what?"
"Mrs. Jung is calling you"
"Me?"

"You are aware of his sickness, right?" Ms. Jung asked the new Mister and Miss that came today. They've been coming here for a week now. They always talk to me. The lady is sweet. I like her. And the man is humble too. But why am I made to stand here? In front of them?
"Yes. We are well aware." The man said and looked at me. He continued, "And don't worry we've already made arrangements for his further treatment abroad." he patted my head.
Sickness? Treatment? Are they talking about me? But.. I don't have a disease or sickness. I'm fine right? I am I know. If Haseol would've been here she would've told them off.
"Okay then" Ms. Jung said and wrote something on a paper and passed it to the man. "here you go. Please sign it" the man signed it and smiled. "Thanks" he said.

Ms. Jung turned to me and held my hand. "Jungkookie", she said, "You've been the most disciplined and smart child in this whole orphanage. As a reward, you're getting new parents." she turned to the man and the woman. "Meet Mr. And Mrs. Jeon. They're your mom and dad" she said and the couple smiled at me.

"Hey Jungkookie~. You like cake right? Mom made it for you." the lady said.

New parents? A family? I-I'm getting sent off again? But I don't even know these people.

End of POV.

"Jungkook-ah. Go and get your bag." Ms. Jung said and he complied.

Before leaving he approached the biggest tree in the garden, a gentle smile graced his lips. The pleasant wind was like a music of old memories to him. He touched the tree, tracing old drawings that he had done on not very long ago. He had been here for an year, and couldn't understand if he wants to leave or not.

Jungkook's POV:

I used to never look at my best photographs, always afraid that they would become worn, sun bleached or damaged. I was mistaken. These pictures are just conduits to my best memories, the ones that are not fantastic enough or traumatic enough to leave a permanent mark on their own. My recollections are quite the opposite of these celluloid stills, unless I visit them often they will fade; and with them the very best of everyone who has blessed my life will vanish from my mind also- as if none of it ever happened. It was in those quieter moments of joy I saw the people beneath their troubles. I saw my mother's love and my fathers child-like spirit. I need those memories to stay with me, I need them to soothe me when the bad ones threaten to erase all traces of those people I still hold dear, even in their absence. They are the evidence of the beautiful souls that belong even to those who made the worst mistakes. And who am I to judge? Enough stress can change the best of us, even me.

"Fall in love with your solitude."

To be continued...
