"S. . . so he dies?"
"Isn't it amazing, sir?"
"Quite."
The doctor nodded and walked to another table. "I have something else to show you." When they both stopped walking, Bussch gestured to another holographic screen. "It's his DNA."
"What am I supposed to look for?"
"You see this small section in the strand of DNA?" Marvin nodded. "It's supposed to be an abnormality, but it's not. This section shows that he's Lucien's biological son. The rest of the strand is an abnormality."
Marvin's brows shot into his hairline. "I don't believe it."
"Yessir. Neither did I. Quinn is 20 percent Just, 80 percent something else. This made me wonder, 'What else is this boy?' I conducted another extensive research and stumbled across an ancient book." He walked again, leading him to his office. Pages of sticky papers covered most of the wall, and his desk was a mess.
"Pardon the disarray. . ." Bussch blushed lightly.
"Somehow, I'm not shocked to see this," Marvin muttered to himself in disgust.
"Anyways." Bussch opened the biggest book you ever saw and blew off the dust that seemed to reappear everytime the book was shut. "I found this book in the old library down town. The one that's about to be closed down. It had its own section, so I was curious as to what it was."
He flipped a few fragile pages carefully and then stopped. "Ah, here it is."
"What?" Marvin asked, trying to peek over Bussch's shoulder.
"What's wrong with Quinn. Every hundred century years one child in every nation; Probus, Malum, Aeternus and Mors, was picked to rule over each of their nations. They are the Electi."
"Wait. I've heard that term before. Isn't it merely folklore?"
"I thought it was too, but look here. These are the signs of people chosen by the Power: dynami, potentia...whatever. The power is different for every nation. And it happened even here in Probus to one of our own, Simon the unlucky, a hundred years ago. According to some nearly extinct articles, he displayed everything that Quinn has so far displayed. It can't be a coincidence."
Marvin touched his thumb and forefinger to his jaw. "Who else knows of this?"
"We are obligated to report only to you, sir, or those that come in your name."
"Yes, of course. No one else hears of this, understand?"
"Yes sir. Understood." He chuckled and closed the enormous book. "I wrote a report, in case you want to understand more about Quinn's condition."
"Yes, well I'll take it with me on my way out. Lucien has no idea how special his son is; the Messiah of Probus." There was a tinge of jealousy in his voice.
"It must be hard taking care of children. I personally can't see myself having any, can you?"
Marvin sent him a wilting look, quite irritated at the statement. "I actually do have one. A son. One that was supposed to carry on my reputation."
"If I may be so bold to ask, what is his name?"
He eyed him like he was the scum under his expensive leather loafers. "I do not believe that's any of your business."
* * *
"Dad, you know, I'm not a kid anymore. You don't have to help me wear my backpack," Quinn groaned.
Lucien quickly retracted his hands. "Sorry, son. I'm just a little antsy. I was told we have a very important colloquy today and I can't help thinking if it's related to you."
