Warnings: none
The target's eyes widened at Silvia's blade hovering inches from her throat. This was a simple mission. Getting her victim alone was easy. All she had to do was eliminate her prey and report. But, her hesitation was potent.
Silvia glanced again to the woman's enlarged stomach. Talia didn't mention that her target would be pregnant. Why does her master want an expecting mother dead?
She really needed to stop questioning things. It's just collateral damage. Innocent lives could to be taken to serve the greater cause. Even the lives of unborn children? The cause of the League of Shadows was something she had killed for many times. So why was she so hesitant? This woman was impeding the agenda of the league. Talia wouldn't have sent her here if she didn't deserve death. Would she?
Silvia had found herself questioning her leader's reasoning for months now. Talia's decisions had become more unstable. The recent targets given to Silvia had only committed minor offenses, but if Talia wanted them dead then she had to obey her master. After all, she had taken her in and trained her. She gave her the potential to be strong, molded her into what she had become. Talia left no room for weakness. She was ruthless.
Silvia should be ruthless too. She should have slit the woman's throat minutes ago. I am not allowed mercy. This was the way. There was no question of morality for a living weapon. She should ignore the whispers in her thoughts. She had been hearing them for too long. They needed to be silenced.
The woman trembled and tears slid down her face as she sputtered out words, pleading for mercy, begging for the life of her child. Silvia cringed but knew what must be done. I am not allowed mercy. The phrase repeated in her mind like a chant as she prepared to do what she had done hundreds of times.
"Please you have to spare me, I didn't mean to fail."
Silvia paused. She should not respond, but she does. "Begging does nothing to change your fate."
"My baby has nothing to do with this." The woman cried harder. She pushed the blade yet again to her throat. I am not allowed mercy.
"Please, it's a girl. Her name is Amanda."
Silvia's breath caught in her chest but she knew she should not let her victims words affect her. I am not allowed mercy. Against her better judgement and the mantra in her head, she asked a question.
"How far along?" Her voice betrayed her hesitance.
The woman stammered. Hope filled her eyes as she realized the cold killer was listening to her pleas. "I'm due in 6 weeks. Please you have to spare my little girl."
Silvia's heart was racing, her mind spinning. But what choice did she have. I am not allowed mercy. She steeled herself and pushed the blade closer to her target's trembling throat, barely touching her skin. She scowled menacingly and the woman closed her eyes, petrified and waiting for what was to come. But when she opened them again, she found the steel at her throat missing. The assassin was gone.
