4 | The Aufer Vitae

We walked over to our desk and sat down. The classroom was on two separate levels with a concrete staircase connecting them. The ceiling was raised up high and there were old paintings covering empty space on the walls. At the front of the classroom was an isolated rectangle for training. Other students started walking in whilst talking.

"Silence." said the professor.

Immediately everyone stopped talking to face the front. The professor wore a long black robe with hanging sleeves. He had round glasses and his hair was brushed to the side. What stood out the most were his facial features. His cheekbones were sunken and his face was really pale. You could almost say he looked like a vampire from his exaggerated features.

He walked over to the front of the room down the aisle. Two of the 'popular' people were still talking to each other. Oops. Recipe for a disaster.

The teacher walked behind them and hit them on the head with his book.

"Are teachers even allowed to do that still?" Ella whispered to me.

"I don't know." I replied

"Anyone who talks without being instructed to will get an immediate hour detention after school. That rule goes to anyone, Miss Ruth."

My face turned red and I put my head on the desk from embarrassment. The class sniggered.

The teacher carried on with the lesson teaching us all basic defence techniques and spells to counterattack opposing wizards and witches.

"Now, as most of you know, not all spells will be for good reason. We are simple wizards and witches but there is a not so good alternative to us. The Aufer Vitae. They are a group of wizards and witches who aim to take over the wizarding world. The Aufer Vitae have created 3 spells. 3 of the most powerful and sinister spells known to the wizarding world. These are called the Mortem Curses." The Professor said.

The Aufer Vitae.. where have I heard that before? Must've been something in the news.

"Should any of you have even just the thought of wanting to apply these curses to anyone, you will be getting a weeks detention. Class dismissed."

Everyone packed up their stuff without saying a word.

"That was a happy lesson.." Ella said.

"Yeah that was weird. Well, I hope nobody in our school is associated with the Aufer Vitae. I wonder what it means" Holly replied.

"It's Latin for remover of life I think. Quite dark if you ask me." I said.

We walked to our dorm and invited Holly and Demi in. I showed them our room and we sat on the beds.

"Our rooms are so different! I thought they were all built the same but you guys have one ten times nicer! I'm jelly" Holly said

We all laughed and left for Magic History.

The lesson was so boring. The sun was glaring through the windows and the desks were really close to each other. I was sat next to Ella and behind us was Holly and Demi.

I was flicking my pencil at Ella when I felt something swoop past my shoulder. I turned around and saw Max and Luca laughing. huh? When I turned back I saw an origami bird flying around my desk which had some sort of levitation spell. I picked it up and the teacher turned around so I had to hide it under my desk. At the end of the lesson Ella and I walked over to Max and Luca.

"Did you send the paper over to my desk?" I asked them.

"No..." They replied in sync then laughed.

"Right. Why?" I asked

"No reason."

Next lesson we all had a free period. Whilst the others went to study in the library, I went back to the dorm to try and de-code the message on the note again. The first sentence was 'Those who read become those who know'. It didn't make sense. Those who read what? The note? I tried rearranging the rest of the ripped pieces of paper and I could almost make out the second sentence. 'House of Neptune's successor is alive' but the rest of it was smudged. God I hate Neptune. They're the cunning and evil house of our school.

Holly and Demi walked into the dorm with Ella following behind.

"Hi! What's that?" Demi said.

"Oh I'm trying to de-code the note we found. I have the first two sentences-ish." I replied.

"Those who read becomes those who know. House of Neptune's successor is alive once again..." Holly read out.

"Do you know what it means?" Ella asked me.

"No I was trying to-" I began, but I got interrupted by Demi.

"House of Neptune. That's the house of the Aufer Vitae..." Demi said. She stood there with a blank expression on her face.

"Should we tell the professor about this? This could be serious.." Holly said.

"No. If anyone finds out we have this we could be in big trouble. Best to keep it a secret for now." Demi.

I could feel my heart beating quickly in my chest. How am I caught in the middle of something like this? Could there be another battle between the two wizarding world sides?
