The ER was having a slow evening, which was good, that meant no one was getting hurt. Mukuro was the only doctor there and was handling the few cases that did come. Suddenly a call came in about a gunshot victim a few minutes out. Mukuro heard as did the nurses, they all scrambled to get ready. By the time the ambulance got there Mukuro and the nurses were ready and waiting. The Paramedics and a police officer rushed in through the doors. Mukuro guided them to the trauma bay as the paramedic briefed them of the damage.
Mukuro tisked taking note of where the three bullet wounds were. He quickly gave orders as one of the nurses pushed the officer to the back to gain information about the victim. Mukuro glanced at one of the nurses as they suppressed the bleeding.
"Is there a surgeon on call today?" Mukuro asked.
The nurse shook his head. "No, the one that was supposed to be is taking a vacation with his family."
Mukuro growled under his breath. "Okay, then I need you to get..." he started listing things he would need. The nurse nodded and rushed off when he got the full list. The other nurses, who were new, looked at him confused.
"What are you going to do doctor?" One asked.
Mukuro glanced at them over his glasses, mismatched gaze serious. "He will die if the bullets aren't removed, and since there's no surgeon on call, I'm going to do it." he stated. Most of the nurses he worked with didn't know he was qualified as a surgeon and he preferred to keep it that way but he couldn't waste time looking for someone else. The two nurses were surprised but quickly focused back on what they were doing. Soon the nurse he sent off came back with what he requested. Mukuro nodded and had one of the others sedate the patient before he started what he needed to do.
It took a while but the bullets were out, the wounds were stitched shut and the man was stable. Mukuro internally sighed and looked at the nurses that had helped him.
"Let's get him bandaged and sent up to recovery," Mukuro stated. The three nod and move to do that. At some point, the police officer had been sent out to the waiting room. Mukuro got cleaned up before going to talk to the officer. However, when he stepped into the waiting room the entire precinct was sitting or standing around. He blinked in momentary surprise and walked further into the room and cleared his throat gaining everyone's attention. Two officers walked up to him.
"How is he?" The younger one asked worriedly.
"We almost lost him once due to one of the bullets that had just barely missed his heart. However, he is now stable and up in recovery." Mukuro replied. The two men sighed in relief.
"We are glad to hear that, thank you so much." The elder man said.
"Just doing my job," Mukuro said.
"No, seriously. You saved his life, you have everyone's' thanks." the man stated as the younger walked off to inform the other officers.
"Please, I'm just doing my job," Mukuro said.
"Doctor, I have a request, may I station an officer outside the room? We still haven't caught the person who did this." He asked.
Mukuro nodded. "Go ahead."
The man nodded and went to talk to the other officers. Mukuro smiled lightly and went back into the ER to continue his shift. He walked up to the nurses' station to see if there were other cases, instead, he was greeted with a bunch of shocked faces.
"What is it?" He asked, looking around.
"How did you know how to do that?" One nurse asked.
Mukuro sighed looking at them. "You really want to know?" He saw everyone nod in response. He took off his glasses letting them hang around his neck. "I'm qualified to be a surgeon."
"Then why are you working in the ER?" the only male nurse asked.
"I can help more people here and in case there are instances like the one that just happene,." Mukuro replied casually. There were murmurs of that made sense. After that was cleared up the slow day at the ER continued.
When his shift was over, Mukuro went up to see how the man was doing. He knocked on the partly opened door before walking in faintly hearing a come in. He walked into the room seeing the older man, and police chief, he had talked to before standing next to the bed where the patient, one Kyoya Hibari, sat wide awake.
"You look like you are doing better," Mukuro commented.
Kyoya nodded. "Yes, thank you."
"Ah doctor Rokudo, I wasn't expecting you." the chief said.
Mukuro chuckled lightly. "My shift just got over, so I figured I'd stop by to see how he was doing before I left."
"Well, I'm doing fine." Kyoya huffed. The chief glared and lightly smacked his head.
"I should be going. It was nice to actually meet you Hibari," Mukuro said before leaving the room, his long ponytail, no one had seen while he was working, swung as he walked out.
Kyoya found himself unable to look away, a small nagging feeling he had seen Rokudo somewhere before but not knowing where.
