Proxies are humans that are groomed to serve under a more powerful Creepypasta. How they are groomed depends on the Creepypasta who is trying to take them.

Slenderman just stalks and causes a "sickness" in his potential proxy. If they can survive the "sickness" for longer than one week and still seem fine to other people, he continually ups the power of the "sickness" until they do something they believe to be irredeemable (Toby) or take on a different persona entirely (Brian/Hoodie and Tim/Masky). Those who don't survive often are left with severe mental trauma (Alex Kralie).

The Puppeteer slowly becomes friends with a child and stays with them through childhood. If they take to him well, he kidnaps them to live in his theater (Zachary). Sometimes, he does have to murder someone who gets in his way. Emra is only his proxy because he created her a body to live in and she is bound to him through it.
