CHAPTER TWO
We had one more game to play, but now a break for food and drink and socializing.
I hear a call, an inviting call, “JB, over here” and turn to see Patricia waiving. She and 3 other girls are waiting on several of us to join them at the table. The 4 couples regularly go to dances, the lake and movies-double dating, taking two cars instead of 4. We have known each other virtually all our lives and what began as “ewww, girls have cooties” then move to tolerating each other has now grown into teenage romance, whatever that is.
Since the place is full of people, our parents, the local preachers, teachers and townspeople, all us guys get is a chaste peck on the cheek when we sit down. It’s possible that our general sweaty, stinky, dirty condition may have been a factor in the quickness of the kiss.
We laugh and talk for a while and eat a little, a task made more difficult since we are eating one-handed while holding hands under the table. Our parents come over to talk, all 16 of them at one time or another. My Dad has to drag my Mother away, rolling his eyes at me and attempting to keep her from sitting down.
We all agree to gather after the last game and go to the creek that feeds the river. The place is just above HorseshoeBendPark and has a couple of picnic tables, a fire pit and a cable with a trapeze that swings out over the creek where we can drop into the cool water below. More, importantly, it is away from the lake that will be covered with people and prying eyes today and all weekend.
