                                                                      Ch. 2    Extraction

Jack came running up the hill and ducked behind a burning wagon.  He took a quick look around and sent a signal to the other guys that all was clear.  So he stood up and walked in to the open saying "The bombing stopped ten minutes ago, so I guess that it is safe now."

"I can't believe that those morons bombed their own people!!!!!!!  Let's go look for some survivors." said Joe, the commander of the special task force Fox Trot, and so they searched.

Jack walked through the left side of town and noticed that no one was at home.  That's weird there should be someone around here.... somewhere......... that's when he saw it the most horrid sight one could think of.  "Um, guys you should see this!"  He yelled, and when the other guys got there they shuddered in horror and Bob actually puked, for right there in the middle of town in what appeared to be a town hall, seemed to be 70 or 80 bodies.  Some were torn apart, crushed, but they were all covered in blood.

"Well boys, looks like we will be needing back up.  Bob, call for back up, and get a grip man; we are in the middle of a war so get used to these kinds of sights already! Sam, Jack, let's get to work there is bound to be at least one survivor, ya know."

Joe had his wit about him, so he took over Bob's role as Squad leader at times like these and Bob didn't have a problem with it for Joe did a better job than him in emergency situations like this one; plus Joe was the team's commanding officer anyway.  So Sam, Jack, and Joe waded in to the mass for bodies calling to see if there would be any response.  Every time they saw a pile they would pull each person from it and check for any signs of life.

Buy the time that help finally got there to help look for survivors; he was already half way through the pile.  He tried to remove a little boy from the pile after making sure that he was dead, but couldn't so he tried again, and again he couldn't so he tried to find what was holding him to the pile.  Jack looked at the boys legs nobody was holding them. Then, he followed the boy's left arm and there was no hand there either.  So when he looked at the boy's right hand there was a small little hand holding his and when he tried to pry the boy's hand out of the little hand its grip tightened.

Jack was surprised and jumped back a little. "Hey, guys, I need some help over here. I think I just found one!"

"What? Really, you certain?" Sam asked as he got there.

"Try to pry this boys hand out of that one and you'll see why I said that 'I think that I found one.'" Jack retorted.

Sam did as Jack said and jumped back with a scream.  "Joe, he's serious I think we did just find a survivor!"

"Ok then, let's get to work and dig that kid out!" As Joe said this Bob came running up to start moving the bodies out of the way so that Sam could check them to make sure that they were also dead.  Joe and Jack dug deeper in to the pile to try to find the child that the little hand belonged to.  With more people working on the pile they were able to get to the very bottom of it with ease.

It was Jack who saw the child first.  "Hey, Joe, there she is. Right there and I think that those are her parents.  Help me pry them off her."  Joe took the man's arms and opened them up while Bob unfolded the woman's arms as Jack pulled her from in-between the dead adults.

When Sam checked the little girl's vital signs he let out a cry of joy.  "She's alive alright! Come on boys let's get her back to base."

"Bob, tell the boys to keep searching! This child needs attention now! Ok get in the jeep it's time to go!  We have to gets this child some help!"
