When I woke up this morning, I checked my emails. I had applied for the fire academy a few weeks ago, but I hadn't told my parents. My father is a CFD firefighter, but he didn't want any of his children to follow in his footsteps, primarily because it is a dangerous job in which many men and women have lost their lives.

It said on the email that I needed to be at the fire academy by 11 a.m., and it was half-past nine, so I got up quietly, trying not to wake up my sister Annabelle, with whom I shared a room because we were still living with my grandparents. I quickly grabbed some clothes before heading to the shower, where I planned to shower before heading downstairs. "Good morning," my mother Cindy said as I walked into the kitchen, smiling. "Good morning, mum," I said, smiling back. "Why are you up so early?" "I got up early," my mother chuckled. "I have to be somewhere in an hour," I jokingly added as I grabbed an apple.

"Where?"  My mom asked as I began to eat it. "OK, I'll tell you, but you have to promise not to tell dad," I said as she glanced at me. My mother was opposed to me being a firefighter, although not as much as my father. "What's up Kiera," my mother said, concerned. "I signed up for the fire academy," I replied, as my mother's face fell. "Seriously Kiera, you know how your father feels about any of his children being firefighters," my mother added, sounding unimpressed.

"I know, but it's what I want to do," I replied, a sad expression on my face since I've wanted to be a firefighter since I was a small child. "OK, I promise," my mother said as she smiled at me. "I'll tell your dad to look after the kids, and I'll take you," mom said as she put her hand on my arm. Later, as my mother drove me to the fire academy and parked the car, I became apprehensive. "Are you ok?" mom asked, placing her hand on my arm. "I'm just nervous," I replied, looking down.

"You'll do great," my mom said with a smile on her face, which made me lookup. "Really?" I asked, excited. "Yes, because your father's daughter," my mom replied, which made me happy. "Now get going before your late, I love you," my mom said as I grabbed my bag and opened the door. "I love you too," I said as I jumped out of the car and headed inside. As I entered the building, the room was packed with people, and the loudness made me even more apprehensive, so I strolled through them all before finding a table.

"Kiera Herrmann," I said as I looked at her, "take up your uniform, gear, and locker room assignment in room a, and report for roll call in the drill hall," the woman said as she handed me a booklet before leading me through the door and up the steps. As I was getting ready in the locker room and closing my locker, I noticed a boy my age standing there staring at me. "Omg jack," I said, excitedly. "Hey Kierra, I'm not surprised to see you here," Jack replied as we started walking together. "How is your father dealing with it? Even though he is a firefighter himself, he never wanted any of the Herrmann kids to become firefighters," Jack said.

"He doesn't know," I said, and he came to a halt. "You didn't tell him?" Jack asked. "You know what he's like," I replied, rolling my eyes. Jack and I had been friends since high school, and he had even heard my father's lecture about how risky it is to be a firefighter. Before we went downstairs, "I'll tell him when it's too late." This made Jack laugh. "Hup, Hup!" yelled the commanding officer as I and Jack dashed down the stairwell. Speed! "Class Ten-hut, Candidates, welcome to the Chicago Fire Academy," he exclaimed before we all lined up As I stood there with a smile on my face.

Afterward, the officer came over "Herrmann" he said as he looked at his clipboard "yes sir" I said as I looked at him "any relation to Christopher Herrmann" he asked "yes sir he's my father" I said which made him smile and nod "I've known your father for over 2 years but you've grown since the last time I saw you" the officer said which made me smile "he didn't tell me you signed up the academy" the officer said sounding hesitant "with all due respect sir if you know my father you know that he's stubborn he doesn't know that I joined the academy and id like to keep it that way until I tell himself "Ok then" the officer said before he walked away.
