[ORIGINAL CHAPTER]
Over the next coming weeks Jack, myself and my dad worked together training everyday at Firehouse 51 as well as studying for the fire fighter 2 exam. It was the hardest one which meant studying as much as possible luckily my dads firehouse had the best firefighters in the city. As I was sat at the squad table with lieutenant Severide, I was only the non squad member who was allowed to sit at the table.
Severide sat there quietly reading the practise paper he had given me, so I wasn't sure how I had done, and he wasn't disclosing anything until he finished reading it and closed it. "So," I said apprehensively as he sat there, "you're going to do great kid," Severide said happily. In response to my question, "really," Severide replied, "yeah, I see all that studying has done the trick." Just then, I heard my dad's voice coming through the door. "So how did she do?" he questioned as he walked over to the table.
The paper was then handed to my father by Severide, and as he read it, I saw a smile spread across his face. "You did it kid," my father said as he started to jump up and down from the ground. Since this was the last step before the exam and becoming a firefighter, I excitedly copied him.
A few days later, the firefighter 2 exam was scheduled. My biggest fear today was being late, so I and Jack arrived early. My parents stood by us until it was time to enter, and I remained still the entire time. And quite and my nerves began to take home of me this was all I ever wanted and for a long time it felt so far away and now it was here, I could hear talking around me but I couldn't hear what was being said until I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
"it's time to go in" my dad said with a smile on his face trying to reassure me "you can do this" Jack said looking at me "no we can do this" I said with a smile before I hugged both of my parents goodbye and headed inside. As all the fire candidates began to walk inside I looked around me, following everyone ahead so I didn't get lost until we reached a gym where there was everyone queuing up we joined the que.
The Chief addressed the candidates before they entered, saying, "Welcome candidates to the fire fighter 2 exam, the hardest test of your lives, but you wouldn't be here if you don't have the test and drive to be one of New York's finest," which finally helped to calm me down. "Heads down," and there was an awkward pause, "and Begin," he continued. Answers started pouring into my thoughts as soon as I opened the paper and started reading the questions.
After half an hour, I had finished the test and noticed that everyone else was still working on it. I turned around to look for Jack, who appeared to be panicking and was biting down on his pen like he used to do in high school when he was freaking out, but as I looked at him, he turned to look at me so I nodded my head and smiled in the hopes that he would see that he could do this.
After a while, I heard the Chief, who was in charge of the exam, stand up, which startled Jack into looking up from his paper and hearing "pens down," before everyone else got up and started to leave the room. As I was leaving, I could see Jack running ahead, calling out, "Jack!" He ignored me as I yelled after him and kept walking away.
Which worried me because he was acting upset. I chased after him, but by the time I got outside, he had left. I then walked over to my parents and told them, "Hey, how was it?" Dad asked with a huge grin on his face "Good. But I think something's up with Jack. He just left without saying goodbye." I said, My worried expression prompted my mother to put her hand on my arm and reassure me, "I'm sure he's fine." Mom said before we all left together.
Later on in the evening I went to the bar with my father, to work I enjoyed working at Mollies because I got to spend a lot of time with the firefighters from 51 so as I was pouring a beer Kelly stood up and began to walk over to the bar "hey" Kelly said with a huge grin on his face which confused me as I continued to serve customers drinks "hey" I replied back before walking over to him "do you want another beer" I asked "no, really I shouldn't be telling you this but you'll find out tomorrow anyway" Kelly said which began to get me worried.
"What," I interrupted, a little angrily, "you scored a 100 on the test, the highest score on the firefighter 2 test in a long time," Kelly said, causing me to freeze in place. "Hey Kiera, you ok?" Kelly worriedly asked, "more serving, less talking," Dad joked as he walked over to me from behind the bar. "What's up with her?" Dad asked as Kelly stood there grinning and showed him the screen of his phone.
Dad took a moment to look at it before jumping for joy, grabbing me by the shoulders, and giving me a big hug. "I'm so proud of you kid," he said as he kissed my head. "My daughter is going to be firefighter," he added before releasing his hold on me and raising a glass in the air. "To Kierra," he said before everyone copied him. Before I turned to Kelly "How did Jack Turner score?" I questioned as my concern for Jack increased.
"You know I can't tell you that" Kelly said as I began to pull a begging face "you weren't supposed to tell me mine, please Kelly he's a friend and he's freaking out" I said as raised his eyes "fine" Kelly said before scrolling down and showing me Jacks result, it was 90. We were going to become candidates together "hey I'm gonna call your mom and tell her the good news" Dad said with a hand in the air and the other holding his phone. Before I grabbed mine from my pocket and began to text Jack "I have inside information about what we scored, you scored 90 congrats" i said as I took a deep breathe.
