A Summer to be Remembered

Chapter 1

Summer in the sunny city of Santa Monica is not as fun as it sounds. At least, not when you have lived their your whole life.
Of course, there are still aspects of the city that make it fun. It just looses its sparkle after a while. But hopefully this summer would be different. I mean come on, 11th times a charm right? That's right, Kate is an 11th grade junior, soon to be senior, at Beach Side High.
Ready to take on the world and all that!
But today marks the first day of summer break and school is the last thing she could be thinking of. Instead, she is browsing the Arctic Fox website for a color to dye her hair.
What better way to kick off the summer?
After a few minutes of debating, she finally decides on periwinkle. But bleach definitely gets added to the cart because there is now way the color would show with out it. Definitely not on her extra dark brown hair.
As soon as she pays for her hair products, she is up and changing her clothes so that she could go see her bestest friend in the entire world — Caleb. Now, we all know that best friends are supposed to tell each other everything and be tight as a knot. Well, it's like that for everything but one little secret.
One secret that her peers have no clue about. And no matter how many times she wants to, Katie just can't bring herself to tell them.
There's always the fear of being unfriended or harassed. And Kate doesn't know how to casually tell people.
I mean come on, how do you casually tell someone you're a lesbian?
Her Parents are supper supportive and she is extremely great full for it. So there's no problem there.
The only thing is Caleb. And it's not like he's doing anything wrong! It's just that sometimes he messages Kate on Twitter tiktoks he finds, where they say to send them to your crush... Kate just pretends like she doesn't see them but after the first video, she noticed how he looks at her. She knows that Caleb would never jeopardize their friendship and she's super appreciative of that, she just doesn't know how to tell him that she doesn't feel that same attraction to him. He's more of a brother than a lover.
And let me tell you, Caleb could have any girl he wanted. I mean any. He's got the looks and the personality that make him a love magnet. For starters, he's tall with olive skin and teeth as straight as himself. AND he's got brown curly hair that makes him look like your latest tiktok crush! He's got it going for him, it's too bad that the one girl he likes is super gay.
BUT ANYWAY, back to current events.
Right when Katie makes it to Calebs house, she's hopping out her car and speeding to the door. Caleb must have known she was coming, because as soon as she's at the door it opens and their he is.
"Hey there you!" she tells him with a smile and a nod.
"Well look who it is! If I remember correctly, didn't I see you yesterday?" Caleb responds with an eyebrow raised.
"What, I can't see my best friend on the first day of summer?" She says with her hands raised innocently.
"The best friend you have every class with?"
"How dare you mention the C word in my presence, especially on the first day of summer!" Kate says in fake horror.
"Oh whatever," Caleb rolls his eyes as he moves aside to let her in.
Kate walks in the door and heads for Calebs room, smiling as she takes in the room. Caleb doesn't change his room very often, if he does it's putting posters up over old ones or changing his bedsheet. New memories covering up old ones, although the old ones are still there.
Kate sits on his bead and waits for Caleb to come take a seat next to her.
"So, what do you plan on doing this summer?" She asks him as he sits next to her.
"You know, I don't really know. Maybe I could just spend it with you? The great summer adventure?" He asked her with a shrug and a small laugh.
"Well duh, of course you can! What else are best friends for? Plus, I've got a while list already. You can just do everything with me," she tells him with a nudge and a smile.
"Well, what are we doing this summer?"
"First, we are going to dye our hair - bleach and all. Then we are going to go to the beach - more than once! After that you will become the co-parent of a snake, then we binge watch criminal minds. That's not all of the list and it won't all happen in that specific order of course, but that is the outline to our adventure." Kate concludes.
"It sounds like we won't have a minute to be bored," Caleb tells her laughing.
For the rest of the day Kate and Caleb hang out before Kate has to leave to be home for supper at her own house.
And after some thinking and debating, she finally decides she is going to come out to her best friend. Maybe not tomorrow or the day after, but before their adventure.
