As I tell Catherine the story, I clench my fists. What kind of cowardly material are these Germans made of-that they can shoot a running little girl!
I go out the door, so I can kind of camouflage the path, with branches and stuff. Pauline and Joseph are helping me, but all Joseph is really doing is playing around with his toy gun. Suddenly Pauline, who is much quicker than I am, of course, runs off. In a few moments, she's back, with Rosemary! "I have to take her to the stables and take care of her." She walks off rapidly and soon disappears. Wow. She thinks she can get away without finishing up? Wow, wow. I am flaming mad and I just quickly finish the job and go inside with Joseph.
An hour later, Pauline comes to the front door and knocks. As stepmother opens the door, I notice she's got dust all over her face, and that she's leading all five of our mares, Sorrel, Rosemary, Moonlight, Daystar, and Gloria by their bridles. She speaks in a very tired voice as she explains. "Mum, Rosemary came back when we were camouflaging the path, and I took her to the stables, but when I opened the door, I heard voices from the attic, so I grabbed their reins and left quickly. I hope we can find somewhere where these beauties can live for a while." Sister Joan Marie comes and takes the horses; she loves animals. "Madame Buerrette, do you have a place where I can put them?" "Yes; Joseph, go show the good sister to the shed. We have extra food and hay there that they can eat." Joseph, Anna, and Sister Joan walk off to the shed, as we all walk into the house.
