SMACK! An egg had hit a wall, then SMACK again. This time the egg had hit the face of young Mallory Karter. She was a 11 year-old girl who was kind, brave, and loved looking for trouble. Her mom was a maid for a kind widow who lived across the street and her father was a farmer. She had a little sister who was six years old and had a bold imagination, named Maggie. She lived with her family in a farm near Red Wood Creek. Their kind and friendly neighbor Linda Parker helped look after the children when Mrs. Karter was out doing her job. Mallory loved Linda for she smelled of flowers and dirt, the country smell.

That morning Maggie had woke Mallory up by asking if Mallory wanted to make pancakes for breakfast. Mallory loved cooking. So she looked through her chestnut closet and found her favorite baggy blue jeans that she wore almost everywhere. They where streaked with mud from yesterdays adventure with some of her favorite pigs ( Mudpie and Porkchop). She also found a plaid shirt ( which she wore when picking crops for her father). Then she hurried down the spiral stairs of her house.

Her sister was waiting impatiently. When they got all the ingredients ready, they immediately got to work. First, they put flour into a blue and white bowl. Then they put two brown eggs and some milk into the bowl. At last the children's favorite part had come, mixing. After they had finished mixing. They put the batter into a pan and started cooking. After the pancakes were all done the two children saw that seven of the eggs still remained. That's when Maggie yelled "FOOD FIGHT!" and just as said the food fight began.

Mallory had the honors to throw the first egg which hit the wall. Then Maggie had thrown the second egg at Mallory's face. "SCORE!" Yelled Maggie. Now Mallory had yolk dripping from her long knotted brown hair. She was ready to get Maggie back for that, and just like that she threw an egg at Maggie and hit her right in the eye. Maggie's eyes stung, but now it was her turn to throw an egg. This time Maggie aimed at Mallory's stomach, but she missed and accidently hit Ms. Parker. Ms. Linda Parker just came over to watch the children and was not definitely expecting this type of a welcome. In fact she let a cry of alarm.

She was abrupt! She was also furious that Mallory an eleven year old girl who was mature enough would let this happen. She was going to have to give that troublesome young lady a piece of her mind!

Mallory heard Linda's cry and was about to explain what had happened when instead Linda said sternly, " Mallory honey, help me clean up this mess." " I would also like it if you Maggie could help to." They both had no choice but to say yes. So they helped Linda clean the mess. Mallory noticed that their was an awkward silence in the room and that Linda had a diamond ring on the fourth finger of her right hand! Mallory just couldn't stop thinking " Could Linda have been engaged with somebody?", or "Could Linda have just bought it at the jewelry store when she was visiting New York City!"

She was bubbling with ideas about where Linda their babysitter who never cared or wore jewelry could have such a thing on her finger. Unless, somebody proposed to her and she accepted which meant that there would be a wedding!

Oh, just thinking about it made Mallory wonder " What if mother makes me wear a pretty dress and makes my hair all pretty!" No, no and no Mallory thought. "There is no way I am going to wear a dress." She hated wearing dresses. She thought of them as uncomfortable, itchy, tight, always to pink and the devil's home. Just thinking about it made her cringe and wearing it was a whole different story.

While she was thinking, she had dropped her cleaning rag and sponge. She stood up and sat down on the couch. Obviously her annoying sister had noticed and interrupted Mallory's thoughts with a loud " Mallory get your butt on the floor and start scrubbing this mess that you made!" "Excuse me!?" Said Mallory astonished. " I am not taking blame for something you did, Maggie. And I will admit I threw two eggs, but so did you." Holding up a strand of hair. She said, " And I have proof."

Linda who had been as quite as a mouse this whole time said, " If both of you would stop arguing, my head would have a chance to stop aching. Mallory please tell me why you stopped cleaning and sat down on the couch, if you don't mind." Mallory knew she couldn't tell a lie and told her babysitter in a whispery voice, " I noticed that you had a ring on your fourth finger and wondered why." Linda had a smile on her face as Mallory said that. Mallory wasn't sure if she should go on and after a couple of moments decided that she would. She said " One of the things I was wondering.... " Her voice trailed of, then started again. " I know this sounds crazy, but I was wondering if someone proposed to you." " I wasn't expecting you to guess that, but I am engaged with someone." Linda said calmly.
