"Hey" I smiled, finally catching up to Michael in the hallway. I'd been trying to get ahold of him all day. I wanted to see what our maybe date meant to him. I wanted him to smile at me the way he did last Friday. But I didn't get that.
He continued talking for a minute with Calum, before turning to me.
"Oh... uh... hey Caroline" He smiled, then kept talking. It was like I wasn't there. I kept walking with them, hoping Calum would stop talking for five seconds so I could ask Michael if he was coming to music club. Music club was my favorite part of school. It's where I could express myself. It felt like home. It's where I'd met most of my friends. It's where I'd met Michael.
"It's this band! They're brilliant! The girls voice is SO hot!" Calum gushed.
"Cool," he replied, rolling his eyes.
"Their cover of Love Don't Die is probably better than the original. And I love Isaac Slade," Calum continued.
"Sorry to interrupt, but are you talking about Everybody Likes Losers?" I said, making my way into the conversation.
"Yea... have you heard of them?" Calum said, looking over at me for the first time. Michael looked like he wanted to do anything but be there discussing a band he had no interest in. I was five seconds away from slapping him.
"I'm the lead singer," I laughed, although it was fake.
"No... you can't be!"
"Look 'em up on Google images" I smiled, as he shook his head. Michael looked down at the phone watching Calum as he searched Google.
"Well shit, Caroline. I didn't know you could sing! You play the bass?"
He was amazed. Despite the fact that I hated him, it was actually kind of exciting having someone know my music.
"Yep."
"Me too! This is so cool! We should play together some time!" He suggested.
"Maybe," I smiled, knowing I wouldn't ever live up to that. Throughout the whole conversation Michael just stood there. He didn't say a word to me or even glance my way. When Calum was finished exchanging numbers with me, Michael basically dragged him down the hall away from me.
"Hey Mikey! We have music today!" I yelled as he got further away.
"Yea... I know" He replied, still sounding annoyed. I rolled my eyes and watched him and Calum walk away. Serrina ran past me, running into me with her shoulder. She looked at me coldly as if to say how dare you let me run into you, then ran up to the two boys, hugging them both, as they smiled. Michael laughed at something she had just said, and then the golden trio walked out the door.
I sighed, walking myself to music room. When I walked in I was greeted by the faces of the people who were as close to me as family. There was of course my best friends Reagan, Kerry, Luke, and Ashton... but there were also others. The older girls who were basically sisters to me and the younger kids who I just loved. Reagan was sitting with Destiny and Cecilia who were a year older, Luke was sitting with his arm wrapped around Kerry, and Ash was flirting with a petite black haired girl named Heather. There were two empty seats for Michael and I... or just me I guess. I slowly dragged the seat over to where Reagan and the girls sat, and plopped the seat down.
"Caro!" Cecilia yelled, hugging me. Destiny followed, getting up and embracing me.
"Where's Mikey, boo?" Cecilia ask.
"Oh... he's not feeling well... can't come" I smiled weakly. Reagan looked at me sadly, as if she knew exactly what just happened. It wouldn't surprise me if she did.
"Too bad... you guys are funny... and really cute... have you ever thought about going out?" Destiny ask, twirling a strand of blonde hair around her finger. Her and Cecilia had died it so many times that I didn't even know their natural hair color.
"Eh... no not really" I lied, leaning my head on Reagan's shoulder.
"Too bad... but anyway... you excited for next show?" She asked and I nodded quickly. Our music club was putting on a production to raise money for our department. It was going to be great. Hopefully.
"So excited!" I smiled at them.
Music club went on a lot longer than it usually seemed to. I mean, I love performance, and musicals and everything... but it just wasn't the same without Michael there playing with my hair, and making fun of some of the less musically gifted middle schoolers. Reagan was too nice to do anything like that and the other two girls were too busy gossiping to notice much else.
Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.
"What's wrong Caroline?" Shay ask quietly. I'd just picked her up from school and we were now driving home.
"Nothing... just... nothing" I smiled weakly.
"No... really what's wrong?" She ask again.
"It's Michael, the guy I like. He kind of just blew me off today. I thought things were going good with us and now suddenly it's like he's avoiding me. I just wish I knew what I did wrong."
"You know maybe it's not you. Maybe it's him." She finally replied. I smiled for what seemed like the first time that day.
"You know I'm supposed to be the one giving you the advice right?" I laughed
"Guess I'm the smart one" She winked at me.
"Guess you're right"
