Said the Finch to the Boy

you're not like most of your kind.
i've watched you —
how you wait to speak,
how you sift your thoughts,
how you fix your faults,
how you pull from the fight
where others would pounce.

gentle.
wise.

i've seen you vexed
and harsh
and glum.
still,
you let the wind sip it all.

...like me.

my friend was killed by one of you —
a rock slung to the chest.
food for ants
and maggots.

don't be sorry.
it wasn't you.

we all end.
we all end...

but do stay with that tender mood.
we've much to learn from you.

Thank you immensely to LaiaLK for reviewing my poetry and for inviting me to join her book club :)

The symbolism of the finch: The beauty of poetry is that readers are free to interpret imagery in whatever way they wish. My interpretation will be different to others' and this diversity in thinking is what I love about literature in general. To me, the finch is an angelic messenger of some kind, keeping an eye on humanity and reporting back to the winged gods. So the "we" in "we've much to learn from you" refers to these winged gods and messengers. I wonder how other readers see the finch, based on their own personal/cultural experiences :)
