"Charlotte, wake up! Breakfast is hot and ready!"
I opened my eyes, immediately squinting into the new day's sunlight. I looked around my room, finding my father standing in the doorway. He laughed.
"Well, good morning Sleeping Beauty."
He chuckled to himself. "Wake up your sister and get downstairs!" he called over his shoulder as he descended down the staircase. I rolled over, looking at my sister's bed located right across from mine.
Me and my identical twin sister, Elizabeth, had a different relationship than you might expect twins to have. We rarely ever fought, and when we did it was a silly argument that always ended in laughter.
She was my best friend.
Although making friends was the only thing I had ever wanted growing up, I later accepted that it was something I was never good at. No matter how hard I tried, I was never able to surround myself with people that I felt really cared for me. It was something that often left me feeling empty and broken, although I would never admit it.
My sister and I shared everything; including our looks, of course. We both had the same, pale complexion in contrast to our dark hair, nearly black. We both had striking green eyes, a trait that I had to admit I loved. The only thing different about us was the way we wore our hair; mine was nearly past my belly button while Elizabeth's was done in a cute pixie-cut. No matter how lonely I felt, she was always there to make me laugh and be a friend.
"Elizabeth, wake up!" I cried, throwing my pillow across the room and right into her face.
"Oof!"
I laughed at my sister as she nearly tumbled out of bed from the force of the pillow hitting her. She laughed with me and threw her covers back, flying out of bed.
"You'll regret that!"
I screamed playfully as she chased me down the stairs. We arrived breathless into the kitchen.
"You two are louder than any other 19 year-olds I know!" my mother scolded, but she had a playful smile on her face. Elizabeth and I sat at the kitchen table and began eating our breakfast. She was having light conversation with my mother while I read the newspaper, our daily ritual.
"Hey, look at this!" I exclaimed, winning the attention of the whole family. "The headline reads, 'The Beatles Officially Signed As A Band', and look who is in it, that boy from high school, James McCartney!"
Elizabeth let out a snort.
"Wasn't he that boy you used to date?"
I let out a small chuckle.
"Oh, yes. I had nearly forgotten."
James Paul McCartney had been my first real boyfriend, and to this day still my only one. We dated for a year or so in high school, but I had grown tired of following him around to gigs and band practices. I broke his heart when I told him it was over at the end of our senior year.
"Guess you should have stayed with him, huh Charlie? You'd be dating a rock star!" Elizabeth laughed, interrupting my thoughts.
"Yeah, guess I should have," I laughed along. I mean, he was still as handsome as ever and everything...
But after what I did to him, he'd never look my way again. Besides, I haven't seen him in nearly two years. He probably doesn't even remember me, right?
