The next morning, I wake up to somebody's arms around my waist. I tense and carefully look over my shoulder. I relax once I see that it's only Shane. I lay my head back down on the pillow and quietly sigh. "You know, I was worried you'd get mad at me for this," Shane mumbles. I jump and turn to look at him. He has a smug smirk on his face.
"I can get mad at you if I want to," I say, "But I didn't want to because you're very nice."
"I could've had a girlfriend," Shane smirks.
"Then we wouldn't have woke up like this. Now would we?" I ask smirking back.
"I see. Your true self is starting to show," Shane smiles. I roll over so my body is facing Shane.
"You know?" Shane says, "You have little golden flecks in your eyes." I smile and shake my head chuckling while my face heats up.
"And you have an auburn red-brown surrounding the hazel near the pupil," I say. Shane's cheeks turn a light shade of pink.
"You're the first person to notice that," Shane says.
"Well, nobody has looked deep enough in your eyes then," I say.
"Alright," Ryan says, "Love birds. We're going home now." Shane and I jump apart from each other quickly, resulting in both of us falling off the bed. Ryan starts laughing uncontrollably.
"Ryan!" I exclaim, "Not funny!"
"She's becoming herself!" Ryan says happily.
"Yeah yeah," I say, "Let's go. I need to see the world again." Shane and Ryan smile and we take off towards L.A.
Once we get there, I smile at the sight of people. We get stopped in traffic and I look at the sidewalk only to get surprised. "Shane," I say.
"Yeah?" he mumbles looking up from his phone.
"I know her!" I shout.
"Who?" Shane asks. I point out the girl and he raises his eyebrows.
"You know Marielle?" Shane asks.
"Yes! Wait, how do you know her?" I ask.
"That's my girlfriend," Ryan says, "She's amazing."
"Ok," I say scrunching up my face, "You can have your opinion but stop there. I don't want to hear anything else." Shane starts to laugh as Ryan blushes.
"Do you want to see her right now?" Ryan asks.
"No... um. I'm not that close with her," I say. Marielle looks over and I quickly turn away. She jogs through the stopped traffic and opens the passenger seat door.
"Hey, babe. Mind if I ride home with you?" Marielle asks.
"Not a problem," Ryan says. I stiffen and sulk in my seat a little. Shane was behind the driver's seat and I was behind the passenger's seat.
"Hey, Shane," Marielle says.
"Hi," Shane says.
"Why aren't you sitting up here?" she asks.
"Because we have a guest," Ryan says.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" she exclaims turning around. The second we make eye contact she turns back to the road.
"Is something wrong?" Ryan asks. Shane notices my discomfort and frowns.
"I'm fine," Marielle and I say at the same time. I pull my knees up to my chest and look out the window focusing on the traffic as we start to move again.
About an hour later, we pull into an apartment complex. "Here we are!" Ryan exclaims, "Your guy's stop."
"She's living with him?" Marielle asks worriedly.
"Yeah, why?" Ryan asks.
"I just worry about Shane. I mean, ya know?" she says.
"Oh, can it Marielle. If anyone, I'd be worried about you living with Ryan," I say.
"Do not start," Marielle says.
"You're the one who started it," I mumble.
"I am not!" she screams. Ryan flinches at the sudden loudness.
"You started it the day I met Jack!" I exclaim.
"We were 15!" She defends.
"You knew I loved him!" I shout.
"How could I have known?" she asks innocently.
"Because I told you all about how much I loved him! You took him from me, you backstabbing cheater!" I scream. I get out of the car and slam the door.
"Wimp!" she calls out the window.
"Coward!" I scream back as Ryan drives away.
"Single loser!" she screams. I go to say something back but stop. Those are the exact words that Jack used when he broke up with me. I grab my elbows and rub my arms. I try not to focus on anything.
"Are you alright?" Shane asks. I shake my head as a tear slips down my cheek. Shane drops his bags and hugs me. And that's when I lost it. It's been eighteen years and I finally let it all out. "I've got you," Shane says. He holds me close to him as he gently rubs my back. A few minutes later, I pull myself together and we walk into Shane's apartment.
