CHAPTER 1
-all is fair in love and war-
I had been looking at the picture in the locket for over an hour now. The scene of my parents being taken away from me kept replaying in my head. It has been five years since the incident yet it felt like it was just yesterday. I could feel my eyes brimming with tears as I allowed the sadness to consume me.
All this was my fault, if I had never complained about our harsh living conditions my parents would have never attempted to cross the border and we would still be in Mexico, living as one big happy family.
My sister and I were placed in a private Christian foster home. I enjoyed living here, everyone was really friendly and this was where I met my best friend Antoinette. I remember meeting Antoinette my best friend when we first got here.
We shared a room so we hung out a lot, she often made fun of my Mexican accent but we both knew she secretly loved it. Both the girls and the boys played together and hung out together most of the time.
All of us in the foster home were practically family and we had love for each other.
Mariah one of the care takers called us downstairs to have dinner and say our evening prayers.
We all took our seats on the dinner table and Mariah told us to bow our heads for prayer. She thanked the Lord for good health, for giving us food and for protection. Once the prayers were done, we all began to eat.
Today we had pasta and grilled chicken for dinner. Everyone looked so happy except me, I was really bothered by what happened to my family. Even though it has been 5 years I just couldn't come to terms that my parents were gone.
For all I know they could be dead. Esmeralda was only 3 when it happened so she didn't have that much memories of our parents. I always had to be happy and strong for her.
My sister will always be my number one priority, she was my rock she made me believe in myself and she always encouraged me. She had hope that one day we'll meet our parents.
I headed to my room to watch a movie on my laptop, I decided that I wasn't going to attend college some might think it was a stupid decision but I had my reasons. I settled on watching 'Titanic'. Even though I had watched it a million times it was still one of my favorite movies of all time.
================================================
The movie had finally ended it was 10pm and I was already tired. I called Esmeralda to come and say our prayers before we went to bed. I said the prayers; I thanked the Lord for giving us a place to live, providing us with food and shelter. I prayed that one day we'll find our parents.
I held the locket close to me as I fell asleep.
