“Hah! You’ll have to do better than that, Wildpaw!” in a flash the bundle of flame-colored fur that was his sister was on top of him, pinning his to the ground. The light brown tabby tom twisted his hind paws and bunched his muscles before kicking her off. He leapt to his paws.

“You’ll have to do better than that, Blazepaw!” he laughed, shaking his tawny fur. The young tom reared and slammed his paws down on her shoulders, but Blazepaw dodged out of the way last-second. The she-cat lunged forward, claws out. Wildpaw reared, catching her. He felt her claws dig into his thick fur, trying to reach his skin. He landed on his back, letting Blazepaw think she had the upper paw. Her forepaws were on his shoulders, but he bunched his hind legs, balancing on his shoulders, and kicked her chest. Wildpaw scrambled to his light brown paws after he sent his sister flying.

The two tabbies glared at each other, out of breath. Blazepaw darted from one side to the other, cuffing him around the ear. Wildpaw quickly ducked, but he still felt claws slicing through his ears, and headbutted her stomach, shoving her backwards again.

“Oooof-” the golden tabby grunted as she was sent flying again. She lay there, panting, defeated. “Alright, you win,”

Wildpaw placed a paw on her shoulders. “Behold! I am Wildstar, conqueror of all!” He heard his mentor, Lilyflame, snort.

“Alright,” the brown she-cat with orange splotches on her back, ears, and tail said. “Blazepaw, out, Specklepaw, Silentpaw, in.” The two named littermates- a brown tom with lighter brown spots on his paws, and a plain grey she-cat with blue eyes and a lighter belly, who ironically was bigger than her brother despite being second-born- stepped into the sandy hollow of the forest.

“What?” Wildpaw looked alarmed, fur bushed out. “I have to fight both of them? At the same time?” his yellow eyes flicked between the two. They were crouching, slowly stalking towards him.

“Unless you would rather fight Lynxpaw, yes. Hickorypaw and Ferretpaw have already fought,”

Wildpaw took one look at the oldest apprentice- who was already as big as her mentor Lightningstrike- and quickly shook his head. “I’ll fight them,” Blazepaw smirked as she padded towards the other apprentices and sat besides them.

“Good luck,” she told him, knowing he was going to be ripped to shreds.

Wildpaw faced the two apprentices. Specklepaw was thin and scrawny, easy to beat if he was on his own, but Silentpaw was hefty and strong, with broad, powerful shoulders and big paws. He gulped, sliding out his claws. Not to mention how well they work together. For some reason no cat knew, Silentpaw couldn’t speak. She could hardly make many sounds at all. At first she was named Quietkit, because she didn’t whimper and squeal like other kits did. Then she was renamed Silentkit, then Silentpaw.

He was forced out of his thoughts as Specklepaw leapt at his front paws, distracting him as Silentpaw leapt over her brother, ramming into his chest. He grunted as he was bowled over. The big grey she-cat pushed him down to the ground, her hind claws raking his fur, Specklepaw nipping at his hind legs. He struggled, before going limp. He felt Silentpaw relax, before Wildpaw twisted himself and scored his claws down her belly and kicking her away. “You can’t defeat me that easily!” he declared, although he could feel his energy fading slowly.

“Maybe not, but I can!” the brown tabby tom darted in and slashed his claws down his side before darting away again. When he spun around to slash at the younger cat, he was gone, until he felt his other side being attacked. Several heartbeats passed of this, before he felt a giant weight being put on him. He sank to his paws, legs no longer able to hold him up.

“Alright, I give up. You win,” Wildpaw gasped. Why was this grey ball of fluff so heavy? He felt the weight move and his ear fur picked up something that sounded like… purring? Was Silentpaw trying to pur? Wildpaw stood up and shook out his pelt, glancing her over. Yep. The furs by her chest were vibrating, and a rattling sound accompanied the growl-like sound. He felt his face heat up as he purred back. “Nice fight...” Beside him, he heard Specklepaw laughing. At what, he wasn’t sure. Silentpaw raised her fluffy light grey tail, and her blue eyes sparkled.

“She says nice try, but you never stood a chance,” Specklepaw told him. Wildpaw just gave him a confused frown.

“Alright, alright. Time’s up.” Lilyflame called. The warrior was padding into the sand pit. She stopped and sniffed all of their injuries. “Think all of you could take on Lynxpaw?” her golden eyes were teasing, but something said she was serious.

“NO!” all six of the other apprentices yelled. Silentpaw snorted and swished her tail.

“That’s also a no,” her brother translated

Lilyflame let out a mrrow of laughter. “That good, aren’t I?” Lynxpaw also padded up, with the three toms beside her. Her littermate, Stormpaw, a dark blue-grey tom with narrow shoulders, Ferretpaw, a light sandy-brown tom with dark ears, paws, and tail with amber eyes, and his littermate, Hickorypaw. Hickorypaw was dark red with a sand-colored belly and yellow eyes.

“Am I so far ahead that not six cats can stop me? I must be the best fighter in the Clan!”

“You’re the kit of Wolfstar and Braveheart, of course you’re big!” Specklepaw yowled at her. “Stormpaw may take after Braveheart, but you take after Wolfstar. You know he’s the most respected Warrior in the Clans! He’s the best fighter the Clan has had since Icefang!”

“Is that jealousy I hear in your voice?”

“Maybe…”

“Alright, its time to head back to camp. You all can take your pick from the fresh-kill pile after you check if the elders or medicine cats need anything,”

She turned and jumped out of the sandy hollow, padding towards camp. All the apprentices followed after her, chatting. As Wildpaw lifted his head to take in the scent of his forest home, a light newleaf breeze lifted his fur.
