5: Spring of Joy

Ramadhan is the month of Qur'an and as such, it cannot be separated from each other. One of the biggest factor that makes Ramadhan the month of joy is its attribution to Qur'an.

As mentioned earlier, Qur'an has a direct correlation to happiness; which is why our righteous predecessors recommended reading it equivalent to the amount of joy one looked for in life. In a masnoon duaa found in Silsilathus Saheehah by Shaykh Al-Albaani, the Prophet SA referred to Quraan in the most beautiful terms indicating it to be a spring of joy. He said,

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.

Quran brings joy in innumerable ways. Some of which are as follows:

1. Mercy (رحمة)

Allah says,
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٞ وَرَحۡمَةٞ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَلَا يَزِيدُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارٗا

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.
-Surah Al Isra, Ayah 82

2. Healing (شفاء)

Allah says,
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدۡ جَآءَتۡكُم مَّوۡعِظَةٞ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَشِفَآءٞ لِّمَا فِي ٱلصُّدُورِ وَهُدٗى وَرَحۡمَةٞ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.
-Surah Yunus, Ayah 57

3. Guidance (هداية)

Allah says,
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَۛ فِيهِۛ هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ

This [Quran] is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.
-Surah Al Baqarah, Ayah 2

4. Blessings (بركة)

Allah says,
وَهَٰذَا كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ مُبَارَكٞ فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ وَٱتَّقُواْ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ

And this [Qur'an] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
-Surah Al An'aam, Ayah 155

5. Reminder (ذكر)

Allah says,
إِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦ تَذۡكِرَةٞۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا

Indeed, this [Quran] is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.
-Surah Al Muzzammil, Ayah 19

6. Honour (عزة)

Allah says,
لَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكُمۡ كِتَٰبٗا فِيهِ ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ

We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your mention [i.e. honour]. Then will you not reason?
-Surah Al Anbiya, Ayah 10

7. Light (نور)

Allah says,
الٓرۚ كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَيۡكَ لِتُخۡرِجَ ٱلنَّاسَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَمِيدِ

Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy.
-Surah Ibrahim, Ayah 1

8. Glad tidings to the Muslims (بشرى للمسلمين)

Allah says,
وَنَزَّلۡنَا عَلَيۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ تِبۡيَٰنٗا لِّكُلِّ شَيۡءٖ وَهُدٗى وَرَحۡمَةٗ وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ

And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.
-Surah An-Nahl, Ayah 89

9. Criterion between truth and falsehood (فرقان)

Allah says,
شَهۡرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِيٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ هُدٗى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَٰتٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَٱلۡفُرۡقَانِۚ

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion [between truth and falsehood].
-Surah Al Baqarah, Ayah 185

10. Basis of Character (أساس الشخصية)

قتادة قُلْتُ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عائشة) أَنْبِئِينِي عَنْ خُلُقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ أَلَسْتَ تَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَتْ فَإِنَّ خُلُقَ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ الْقُرْآنَ

Qatadah reported: I said to Aisha, "O mother of the believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah SA."
Aisha said, "Have you not read the Quran?"
I said, "Of course."
Aisha said, "Verily, the character of the Prophet of Allah was the Quran."
(Saheeh Muslim 746)

From honour to mercy, from healing to glad tidings, when Qur'an provides us with everything that one needs for a happy life, shouldn't we be joyful for the month that commemorates this book?
