It was a warm summer morning at the popular tourist beach. Kevin had arrived an hour earlier on a flight from Melbourne, checked into his holiday unit, and immediately walked down to the beach. He had been in for his first swim and just sat down on his towel when a shower of sand landed in his lap.
"Hey watch it," he snapped glancing up to see who had just kicked sand on him.
He found himself looking up into the face of a tall girl with long blonde hair."I'm so sorry," she said with a concerned expression, "I'm really clumsy this morning. I almost tripped over just then. Lucky I didn't or I would have fallen on top of you."
Kevin stood up bushing himself off. "That's okay," he said, "No harm done. Are you here on holidays?"
"Yep, for ten days. I'm with my parents over there." She pointed to a man and a woman standing further down the beach looking back at her. "I better catch up to them. See you later, Kevin." She ran off to join her parents.
"See you," Kevin called after her, "Wait, how did you know my name?" But she was out of earshot.
He sat back down feeling puzzled. He didn't tell her his name, so how did she know? He reached into his bag for the sunscreen, then looked at the side of the bag and laughed to himself. This was his old bag from his school camping days. He had scrawled his name "Kevin W" on the outside of it. The girl had obviously noticed it. For a minute there he had thought she must be psychic!
He glanced down the beach and saw the girl and her parents setting up their towels on the sand. The girl stood up and slowly lifted her sundress over her head. Kevin watched in fascination. It was almost an erotic experience like she was stripping naked. But under her dress was a black bikini which clung so nicely to her perfect figure. He realised he was staring and reluctantly turned away.
He lay down on his towel enjoying the warmth of the sun. He tried to put the events of the last few weeks out of his mind but as he dozed in the sunshine her face swam into view, a face contorted with rage as she yelled at him, "I hate you Kevin! You're a control freak and a psycho! Go and work your crap on some other girl. Then she was in the bedroom packing a suitcase before storming out the door and slamming it behind her. He had watched her go in disbelief. Was he really a control freak? Just because he usually chose what movie they went to see, which restaurant they went to for dinner, he would suggest to her what she should order from the menu, but he didn't insist on it. He often suggested what she should wear when they went out. Oh fuck! He was a control freak. He had tried to control his girlfriend and now he had lost her because of it!
The break up had happened six weeks ago. He had only seen her once since then, and that was when she had come back to his apartment to pick up the rest of her things. She still had anger smouldering in her eyes and had refused to say a word to him. Then she was gone. They had been living together for eight months, he was used to having her around. Now he was alone and lonely. He had to get away from home and his job for a few days, so he booked a one week holiday at a resort in a popular tourist city a long way from his home in Melbourne.
Some children ran past him shouting which broke him out of his half sleep. He already felt the stress of recent events melting away. Forget Candace. He would enjoy his week here, then go back home and start dating other girls. One broken relationship was not going to ruin his life.
He got up and walked back into the surf for another swim. As he was wading in the blonde girl suddenly appeared from out of the water in front of him. "Watch out for those waves, Kevin," she smiled at him, "Some of them are pretty rough."
