We are two ships in the night. We have a fleeting contact, then we sail on to our different destinations, never to meet again. But during those magical moments together we will create memories to last a lifetime.
Jessica's words came back to Kevin as he sat on the beach watching the grey waves roll in onto the sand. He was at the same spot he had met Jessica eight days ago. It was a cloudy day and there were not many people at the beach. The grey clouds overhead matched his mood.
Last night he had somehow managed to stumble all the way back to his unit where he lay on his bed, not sleeping a wink the whole night as his mind kept replaying the horrific events which lead to the death of the girl he loved. It was his fault she had had died. She had saved his life, but he couldn't save her. He should have got on the plane yesterday and gone home to Melbourne. If he had she would still be alive. He had rebooked his flight home and his plane would leave that afternoon at three o'clock. After two hours sitting on the beach alone thinking about what could have been, he made his way back to his unit where he packed his bag and boarded the bus for the airport. After five drinks of scotch in the departure lounge he boarded the plane and fell into a grateful sleep almost all the way home.
Back in his familiar surroundings at home Kevin still couldn't function properly. He hardly ate, he couldn't sleep at night, and his friends kept asking him what was wrong. He couldn't tell them of course. On his first night home he had caught the late news on television. A brief mention was made at the end of the bulletin about a young woman being found dead in a holiday apartment at a Queensland tourist city. The police said she had suffered a gunshot injury and at the time they had no witnesses or leads. At least he was in the clear, but Daniel and Lucy and got away, and those foreign men including the one who had shot Jessica had also escaped. Maybe he should have stayed and told the police what he knew, but what difference could it have made? He didn't know much anyway, and it wouldn't bring his Jessica back. He had remembered to throw her phone into the river the previous night as he had somehow made his way back to his unit.
The week passed and it was Sunday. Kevin was expected back at his job the following day. He didn't know how he would manage it. He would probably mess up everything he did and get fired.
Then came an unexpected phone call. "Kevin, it's Candace. Umm....is it all right if I come over? I need to talk to you."
"You want to talk to me?" he mumbled, "I won't be much company but all right, come over."
He poured himself a scotch and sat down. What did she want to talk about he wondered. She probably just wanted her iPod back. Well she could have it. But if she started yelling at him again he'd probably throw it at her!
Half an hour later she was standing at the door. Her hair had grown longer since he saw her last and she looked quite pretty in a clingy white dress which showed off her figure. For a moment the old feelings came rushing back, and he realised he still loved her despite everything that had gone wrong between them.
She sat at the table and he sat down opposite her. "Your iPod's over there," he said nodding towards the kitchen counter.
She looked nervous. "That's not why I'm here. I.... it's hard to say this but....I was wrong. I was a real bitch to you and I'm sorry. You're not a control freak, you're a good guy. We had a lot of good times together. I miss those times and I miss you."
She reached across the table and took his hand in hers. "Can we try again? Please, Kevin can we try again?"Kevin stared across the table. He could see Jessica's beautiful face, but then she gradually faded and was replaced by Candace as she leaned across and gently kissed him. At first he sat still feeling numb, but then he reached over to put his arms around her shoulders and pull her in closer as the kiss seemed to go on forever.
