The office was pretty quiet that day. Everyone was particularly quiet, and the air had an uncomfortable solemness too it. Everyone looked especially pale and mournful, except for the two young ladies at the backcorner. It was their first day on the job, and the two couldn't have been more excited. Their excitement completely distracted them from the offices strange aura.
On the other side of the office the chief director was trying his best to get a seasoned detective to take a case. He made his way through the entire office. Each detective saying they would rather quite than take such a dangerous and hopeless case. It gave the chief no other choice.... So he made his way to the back corner.
"Ladies!" he called getting their attention. The blonde immediately looked up, while the other just hummed in response. "Now, I don't usually give amateurs a case on their first day, but you two seem capable."
"Oh thank you, sir! We won't let you down!" the blonde smiled taking the case file from the chief.
"Hold on," the other said finally looking up at the director. "I saw you try to give others this case, but they refused. Why wouldn't they take it?" she asked.
The director looked like a caught criminal, sighing before he finally answered. "The reason we had two openings.... is because our best detectives...werekilledtryingtosolvethiscase..." he replied purposefully slurring the last bit.
The ravenette smirked at his cowardliness. "What was that again?"
"They died trying to solve this case!" he replied half yelling. He stuck his hand out too take back the files.
"What are you doing?" the ravenette asked.
"Taking back the file?" he asked more so questioning himself.
"No need. We'll be working this case,"she replied.
"Miss Gasstello, I just told you my best detectives died solving this case. I understand that you and Miss Carraway graduated top in your class, but you've never even worked a case before," he warned.
"We know the danger, but like you said, your best detectives died on this case. So if we solve it, we'll be the best detectives. It would give us a good reputation especially since we are 'amateurs'," Miss Gabrielle Gasstello replied.
The chief scoffed. "I would keep my pride in check if I were you. It could get you killed in this business."
"Its not pride: it's good business. Now if you don't mind, Miss Caraway and I were about to solve a case. We could use some peace and quiet."
