Rapunzel.
A week later, I heard a small knock on the door in the middle of the night.
Putting on a coat, I ran downstairs and opened the door. There was nobody there.
"Jack?"
A pair of icy blue eyes appeared from the top of the window, and I looked up, grinning at Jack.
"Hi." I said, smiling.
"Hey," he said swooping down."I have something to show you."
Grabbing my hand, he jumped off from the ledge, and I screamed from the sudden change of surroundings. Jack laughed at my reaction, and we screeched to a halt, floating a foot of the ground before launching into the air again. Reaching the clouds, we stopped and floated for a moment, soaring through the skies on our stomachs like birds.
"This.....is amazing.." I breathed. The view was so beautiful up there. I ran my fingers through the cloud beneath me and brought them up to see a thin layer of frost had appeared.
"You like it?" Jack asked, giddy with excitement. I nodded, not able to describe the immense beauty. The sky was dark above me with stars twinkling in the night. The moon glowed ahead of me, a bright round shape of beauty.
"HELLO MANNY" Jack yelled.
"Manny?"
"Yeah, Manny. Man on moon. He's a spirit, like me."
"Spirit?" I asked, curious. Jack seemed to regret his words.
"Here." he said eventually, handing me his staff. "I don't need it to fly anymore. Just hold onto it and follow me."
He let go of my hand, racing ahead, leaving me to fumble with the staff before chasing after him. We chased each other through the sky, laughing as we went. I didn't want this to end. But eventually, he took me home, opening the doors for me.
"That was the most fun I ever had." I said, grinning at this strange boy.
"Same." he replied, a lost look in his eyes. "I don't nearly have enough fun these days."
"So...are you coming back?" I asked eagerly.
"Course I am, perhaps in a day or so. Don't wait for me, I usually have very bad timing." He replied, pretending to scold me.
"I will."
He turned to leave, but then turned back, holding out his staff.
"Have it." he said, handing it over. "As a promise that I'll come back."
I accepted it gratefully before waving goodbye, stroking the staff before going back to my room to try to fall back asleep.
