Guardian's thoughts

Evening. The sun was slowly approaching the horizon, gradually becoming more orange. The sky was full of clouds, which were slowly moving. Among the clouds was Angel Island, which is a huge mass of land held in the air by a powerful source of energy.

Angel Island has its guardian, Knuckles the Echidna, who has tirelessly guarded the island and the powerful energy source, Master Emerald, for many years. This huge emerald was destroyed or stolen several times, but thanks to the intervention of Knuckles and his friends, Master Emerald always returned to its place on the destroyed altar. This is where Knuckles spent most of the day.

Knuckles sat on the altar leaning against Master Emerald and watched the setting sun. The evening was warm and there was a light breeze, which was not bad weather in the middle of summer. Moments like these always made Knuckles think about things. Sometimes they were memories of past adventures, but often his thoughts went the other way and tried to predict his future. Knuckles never considered himself a great thinker despite the fact that thinking was his main pastime for many years.

Knuckles sighed and decided to take a short walk around the island. Without a hurry, he got up from the altar, stretched several times, then slowly began to walk ahead, leaving Master Emerald behind him.

Angel Island had a lot of forests that were almost empty at the time of day, because all the animals returned to their nests and burrows. Knuckles had his favorite path he had walked for many years. He could go with his eyes closed and nothing would happen to him. It made thinking even easier.

Echidna stopped at the lake and looked at the smooth water that reflected the orange sun. Knuckles remembered that this lake was connected to the underground Hydrocity Zone. Ancient sunken ruins whose origin he did not even know. He wasn't an archaeologist, and he didn't have time for that either. Last time he was in these ruins many years ago. It was the moment when he thought Sonic was a thief and tried to get rid of him in various ways, for example by throwing him into a sunken city. Knuckles was ashamed of this period of his life when he was naive and tried to get rid of his future friend.

That one memory made Knuckles think about the past. The most distant past he knows is 4000 years ago. The moment when Pachacamac tried to gain the power of Master Emerald, condemning almost the entire tribe to extinction. Knuckles hoped he would never repeat the mistake of his ancestor. It was true that he used Master Emerald several times for his own benefit, but it was never a big deal, like ruling the world. These were small things against which Master Emerald didn't mind.

Knuckles remembered all his adventures he had experienced since he met the blue hedgehog and smiled slightly. He knew that he owed his current situation to his friends who had helped him many times. After the war, Eggman disappeared and didn't show up for years. But Knuckles was always ready for his return, because he knew best how clever and cunning a doctor with a large mustache was.

The sun was getting lower, so Knuckles stopped looking at the lake and went on. After a few minutes he stopped on a small meadow and looked at the sky. The first thing he noticed was the levitating Sky Sanctuary Zone. These were more ruins of which he knew little or nothing. Knuckles yawned. For him it was a clear sign that his walk was already a little too long and that he should return to the altar and Master Emerald.

To leave the forest, Knuckles had to cross a bridge over a small river. It was another place where he always made a short stop. Knuckles stopped on the bridge, leaned forward and looked at his reflection in the water. It made new thoughts come to his mind.

For many years he thought he was the last echidna on Mobius because he had not met anyone like him. He didn't like to admit it, but he was always afraid that one day he would die alone on this island and no one would know about it. If that happened, his species would disappear forever. Fortunately, a few years ago he realized that he was wrong. Thanks to this, hope appeared in his heart along with new feelings.

The area around Knuckles began to get darker. Guardian knew it was time to return to the altar before it was completely dark. So he stopped looking at his reflection and moved forward resolutely. A minute later he left the forest and saw in front of him an altar with a huge emerald. Knuckles smiled and walked around the altar. He knew who he would find here.

Tikal lay on the other side of the altar and slept soundly. Her breathing was regular and calm. Knuckles looked at her and smiled more. Since Tikal got rid of her immortality, she has helped Knuckles guard the island and Master Emerald. Thanks to this, lonely guardian was no longer lonely.

Knuckles sat on the altar next to Tikal and looked at the sun, which was almost completely behind the horizon. Knuckles admired the beautiful view, but he knew something was missing. He looked at Tikal again, then moved her closer to him, placed her head on his lap, and began to gently run his fingers over her head and hair. Tikal didn't wake up, but began to purr quietly, which made Knuckles smile even wider.

Now all he wanted to think about was his happy future.

Okay... I don't know why I wrote it. An idea for a oneshot appeared in my head and I just started writing. I've always liked to imagine what different characters think. Knuckles has a lot of time to think, so I decided to start with him. Let me know if you like it and if you want me to write more oneshots in which I describe the thoughts of other characters. I will get better every time.

See ya!
