"No wait!"

I screamed out as much as I could but to no avail. The door was locked and the footsteps of my friends faded down the hall.

My attempt to pull myself from the floor and reach for the door was ended by the explosion of the machine behind me.

Followed by a sharp ringing in my ears.

Before my vision clouded and everything went black.

I was awoken to the soothing sound of water lapping against the shore. When I slowly opened my eyes I found that I was lying on wet grass with a river not too far from where I was.

I sat up and looked around, the place was certainly not anywhere on Earth. There were lightbulbs suspended from somewhere far up in the dark, star covered sky, which dimly lit a small path leading down to the river. As I looked down the path I saw a much stronger light coming from the river.

My curiosity got the better of me, and I followed the path down to the light.

As I approached, I noticed the bright light was swaying gently despite no wind. As I walked closer and closer the outline of a small rowing boat came into view, sitting upon the gleaming water. The light turned out to be a bright lantern hanging from one of end of the boat.

"Going across missy?"

My head snapped to my left where a man was sitting on a log holding an oar. He wore a black cloak and witch-like hat.

"Well missy"

"Uh..umm...going across to where?"

The man rolled his eyes, he looked as though he had had this conversation many times before.

"Well to the underworld of course."

"The underworld?"

"Yes missy the underworld, do keep up."

"But isn't that the land of the dead."

"Oh wow, you're not as thick as you look."

As I can't see my own face, I can't tell you what my expression was, I can only imagine it was a combination of drastic shock and confusion.

"Do you mean to say that I am dead?"

"That's right, well done. So I will ask you again, do you want me to take you across the river."
