Simba lay flat on his back, his eyes wide open and breathing as though he had just ran a marathon. You couldn't really call his life ordinary. He went to a special army school for the children of army men. He had bright blue eyes, black hair and several freckles around his cheek. But most strangely of all, his dad had presumably died serving the Royal Air Force. Simba was widely renowned for this fact and also earned a lot of respect in his school. But for him and his mum, this fact just brought sorrow into their lives. However, now things might change...
He just had a vivid dream which made him question his parentage. Could his dad really be alive or was the dream he just had a bunch of baloney? Thousands of question sprouted in his mind, forcing him to sit up and put both his hands on his head. Simba could definitely not ignore this. He had to share it with someone. He got up and started walking around his room, the dream shining like a newly lit fire. His brain was now really buzzing. As Simba made his way downstairs, he thought what would his mum say? She was really touchy around this topic and never failed to produce tears whenever his dad was mentioned. When Simba arrived downstairs, he was met with quite a shock. His mum had already laid out breakfast for him on the square dining table and was already eating! How often has this ever happened? She almost always waited for Simba to come and help her. But what was special about today? She even had a vibrant, toothless grin on her face. He didn't want to spoil her mood because of this dream. She was never this joyful. He quickly came and sat down on his chair, still staring at his mum. "Hello there, Sim!" She exclaimed. "Had a good sleep?"
"W-What? Ohh... Yeah, yeah. Wonderful, dreamless sleep" he lied.
Without a word, he started gulping down his toast while his mum looked at him disapprovingly.
"Sim, I'm pretty sure that I have taught you how to eat your food. First, you have to-" She was stopped midway in her sentence.
"Mum, I'm pretty sure that I know how to eat food." He replied angrily."I'm a fourteen-year-old now." All of the joy on Simba's mum's face was extracted. She now had a very bleak smile on her face.
"Is there something wrong son?" She queried, waiting for a reply.
"No, no mum. I'm sorry. It's just that I dreamt about dad last night." He confessed.
A huge gasp fled his mum's mouth. She was lost for words. A wet, damp tear departed from her eyes.
"Y-You saw him i-in your dream?"She mumbled. Simba nodded.
She collapsed on to her chair. For several minutes. Neither spoke to one another. Then Simba's mum asked, "What did he say?"
Simba was now at a crossroad. Should he tell his mum about the dreadful dream? Or should he remain quiet? He chose the latter. "Mum, I can't remember what he said. I just saw him. That's it." He explained untruthfully. His mum nodded and went to her room, her leftover food lying motionless on the table. Simba had fury in his eyes. Why couldn't he just play along and be optimistic like his mother? He kicked over a chair, the rage inside of him incomplete. When Simba came back to his senses, he began doing the dishes and other household chores. When all this was finished, he went back to his room and started getting ready for school. He just recollected that it was Monday today. A miserable groan came out of Simba's mouth. Today he had to walk to school. His school was approximately 5 miles away. He then wore his clothes, the unpleasant thought still in his mind. He was still thinking about his dream. What if that was what had happened and his dad was really alive. He stared at the picture of the young, attractive man on his bedside table. Simba picked it up and began examining the picture." Are you really alive?" He asked the picture. When no reply came out, Simba put it back on his desk and headed out of the house, not daring to say anything to his grief-stricken mum and set out outside of the house for his 1 and a half-hour walk.
The only encouraging fact about this dreadful walk was that Simba was going to meet up with his best friends AJ and Reyna. They were perhaps the only people he could trust(except for his mom). He always told them everything important; so Simba needed to tell them about this strange dream of his. He was walking towards AJ's house when a thought crossed his mind. Why did the school even bring up this exercise programme in the first place? Simba thought that it was extremely bizarre and completely irrational. What was the point of making students walk once every week home from school? It only ached their legs. Only the students who lived near Cornwall Military School would be living in luxury.
When Simba arrived at AJ's footpath, he noticed another girl was standing there. She had black hair, brown eyes and was wearing a military uniform. She wore bright blue glasses and was carrying on her back a light blue bag."Hi Simba!" Reyna said, noticing him.
"Oh hi Reyna!" Simba said enthusiastically."Where's AJ?" He asked her.
"Still getting ready" She moaned, a yawn escaping her mouth."I had to get up 2 hours early because of this stupid exercise programme. I absolutely hate it. And that moody old brat who made it up! I just wish I could come up to her and-"
" Woah, Woah Reyna. Calm down."Came a frail voice."It's only Monday morning!" A tall, blonde-haired boy was standing in the doorway. His hair was all scruffy and he had huge, black and dark circles under his eyes.
"AJ! What happened to you?" Reyna cried out.
"Nothing, nothing. Just a lack of sleep." He explained."Why don't we get going?" He mumbled sleepily."We have a long way ahead of us."
"Yeah. We better." Simba mumbled, noticing the confused look on Reyna and AJ's faces."I have a lot of things to tell you"
