Mer is the first face I see after the lunch bell rings. God, she's everywhere.
"Hey gurl, you feeling better?" She says, scrolling through her phone and laughing to herself about who knows what.
"No," I say, trying not to roll my eyes. How do I tell someone we aren't friends anymore because in the future we get into a big fight and even though I went back in time, I'm still mad? The answer is, you don't. So, I just have to deal with her until our inevitable break up occurs. But, in the meantime, she may be my only ticket to Kai.
"Hey, isn't Frank's nephew Sean Miller?"
"Yeah, why?" Mer asks, looking surprised I'd remember.
"We should go get to know him. I mean, if your mom marries Frank, then he'll be like family or something."
"OR something is for real an understatement..." Mer says with that voice.
"What?" I ask.
"I haven't told you...but I'm low key crushing on him."
What?! Why didn't she tell me last year? Is it weird that I'm mad at her for not telling me? I mean, I would have remembered—right? It doesn't matter. This is about Kai. In a few shorts weeks, I should be rid of her anyways.
"Perfect, let's go sit with him," I say, basically dragging her over to the lunch table where Sean is sitting with none other than my Kai.
"Ladies," Damien says, noticing Mer and I sit down next to Sean.
"Hey Sean, mind if us queens sit with you?" Mer says, flicking the back of Sean's ear.
I cringe at her smugness but sit down with a smile because Kai's eyes are on me.
"You're hallway girl, Shay, right?" Kai says, looking at me.
He remembered!
"Yes!" Again, my over-eagerness only gets me a weird look from Kai.
"Yeah, she's the one who is a little off her rockers, at least she's pretty..." Mer says, widening her eyes to shake her head.
"I uhh—"
"Daniel!" Kai interrupts my attempt to talk to him, greeting another friend I couldn't stand when we dated—or when we will date? I don't know what to say anymore. This is weird.
What's weirder is that Mer is getting all the attention at the table. She has everyone laughing at her lame memes. She keeps passing her phone around and squishing her boobs against the table as she leans across to show everyone.
"Kermit memes are so irrelevant now," I say, trying to draw the attention away from Mer.
"No way, Kermy is my man!" Kai says, offended.
Since when?!
"For sure, Kermy is part of the literary canon of memes," Mer says, pretending to sip some tea. "But that's none of my business."
"Bob Ross memes are my fav," I say, knowing it will salvage my last comment.
Mer laughs a little. I know she knows I'm full of it. I step on her toe before she can open her mouth to comment.
"Naw, he's legit overrated," Kai says, opening his phone, obviously bored of the conversation.
What the hell? When I suggested Bob Ross for his graduation cap, he loved it! Didn't he?
"Let's go after school," Kai says, showing his phone to Daniel, then Sean, and then Damien.
"Do what?!" Oh God, that was too eager.
Daniel and Damien glance over at Kai, who then answers unwillingly. "Uhh, we're gonna head down to the frolf course at Cottonwood but frolf with hand weights on."
Shit. I hate frolf! Kai would always drag me along.
"IN!" Damien yells.
"We LOVE frolf!" I say as Mer raises her eyebrows at me.
"You two should come," Sean says, smiling over at Mer.
Mer winks back at him, and it distracts her from commenting on the fact that I'm one hundred percent lying out my ass right now.
Kai and Daniel give Sean the "not cool bro" look. I know from experience that they hate girls ruining their bro time.
"It's just gonna be chill though," Sean says, trying to backtrack.
"Oh, for sure, but we'll go. Right, Summer?" I ask, stepping on her toe more forcefully this time.
"For sure," she yells, while elbowing me with a dirty look.
"Cool," Sean says, sealing my date with destiny.
YES! Okay, I have an in. Operation get Kai to fall for me is moving to the next phase!
Please take a second to vote.
What does everyone think is going to happen when Shay and Mer go frolfing with the guys later?
