"I see you've woken up Mr. Hunt," The doctor walked in with two nurses trailing behind, "Do you remember what happened?"

Rowan closed his eyes for a second, "I remember..." He opened them and looked to Aelin, "Wait. Who are you?"

This can't be happening.

She blinked once, twice, and heard Fenrys cough awkwardly behind her.

Rowan chuckled all of a sudden, "Just kidding."

Nobody was laughing.

Aelin grabbed the pillow on her chair and yelled, "Why. Would. You. Do. That!" She smacked him and tiny feathers flew from the pillow. She only stopped when the doctor said she might open up his stitches.

"I'll run a couple of tests to make sure all your vitals are stable, but from what I can see you should be able to go home by tomorrow."

Gavriel shook the doctors hand and thanked him. Nehemiah grabbed Elide and Aedion by the hand and dragged everyone out to the lobby, leaving them alone.

"Where is he? Cain, I mean," Rowan asked, blowing off a feather that landed on his shoulder.

"Jail," Aelin huffed, siting on the edge of the hospital bed and glaring at the wall.

"What did that wall ever do to you?"

She huffed another breath and finally turned around to look at him. To finally look into those gorgeous green eyes and know it wasn't going to be the last time.

"Stop laughing, Rowan." She felt her chin quiver slightly, "You almost died. I don't know what I would've done if you did, and that it was my fault."

"I'm no good for you," Aelin finally said. "My past, who I was. I'm a terrible person." She didn't let herself cry though, let herself get it off her chest first.

He smiled sadly and took her hand. He stroked the back of her hand with his thumb and kissed each finger individually.

"I love you, Aelin. I love every part of you," Rowan took her other hand and kissed those fingers. "There is no limits to what I can give you, no time I need. Even when this world is a forgotten whisper of dust between stars, I will always love you."

Aelin squeezed her hand in his, "I love you, too." And from the moment they met to the moment he jumped a bullet for her, she's wanted to say it.

The thought of him dying, never knowing that, scared her to bits. But they were alive, and most importantly they were together, and Aelin was so grateful.

"Come here," He patted the small space beside him and Aelin snuggled in his arms.

"You ever going to forgive me for pulling that joke?"

She patted his cheek lightly, "We'll see about that, kiddo."

"Fenrys, catch!" A perfectly wrapped football was thrown across the living room by Rowan and luckily did not break anything.

"Thanks, dude." Fenrys opened it and twirled the ball around in his hands, "I forgot to buy all of you presents. Next year?"

It was Christmas morning and they were all exchanging gifts. Nehemiah and Elide were busy putting all the cookies in the oven, Fenrys and Gavriel were entertaining themselves with Rowan's present, and Aelin and Aedion were talking by the fireplace.

"Mind if I steal her, man?"

Aedion looked to Aelin once, giving her the 'we're going to continue this later' look and left.

"What is it? Is your back hurting, again?"

They left the hospital the next day, just like the doctor said, and he's healing slowly but some days the pain lingers a bit. They were able to make it to the Royal Theatre and Aelin swears she could still hear the symphony playing.

"I'm fine," He smiled warmly, and gave her a small kiss, "Do I really need a reason to be with my girlfriend?"

He leaned in for another kiss but she lifted her hand up, backing away, "Are you going to tell me what's up or not?"

Rolling his eyes, he groaned, "Fine. I wanted to wait until dinner at least, but I guess I can give it to you now."

He walked into their room and came back out with a large box.

"You got me a present?"

Aelin didn't hide the blush that spread to her cheeks and heard all of her friends gather around to see what it is.

"Open it," Rowan places the box in front of her.

Slowly, she pulled at the ribbon and lifted open the cover.

"No way," She gasped, opening the cover wide enough so everyone could see. And from inside, a dog with golden fur and bright eyes jumped out and started licking Aelin. "You got me a dog?!"

He nodded with a grin, watching the little pup start sniffing around the couches and tables.

"What're you gonna name her?" Aedion asked, nose twitching when it got too close.

"Fluffy!"

"No. Gus!"

"Snoopy Dog!"

"I think I'm going to go with..." Aelin drawled, picking up the puppy, "Fleetfoot."

Everyone groaned but Dorian.

"Hey, Dori!"

Dorian glared, "No, Aelin."

"Dori, where's Chaol?" She wondered, and he glanced to the clock resting on the wall. It was almost midnight.

"That's weird. He should be back from his parents house by now." Dorian and Nehemiah slept over at their apartment for the weekend, tired and wanting to spend the holidays together.

The doorbell rang and Dorian got up to answer it, "That must be him."

Aelin went with him, leaving Fleetfoot in Rowan's lap.

He opened the door and standing outside was Chaol, shivering from head to toe and looking like he's been crying all day long.

"Babe, what's wrong?"

Chaol licked his chapped lips and swallowed dryly.

"My dad's sending me to the army."
