Kate's POV
I woke up to the sunlight shining in my face from the window beside me. A faint smile formed on my lips as the warmth of it crept over me, causing hope for the day to drown out all other thoughts.
I glanced down to see Lily still asleep at my side. Her face was covered by her messy braids falling over it. Normally, she's awake before me, but we haven't slept in an actual bed in a while. She's so cute when she sleeps. Her little snores are absolutely adorable and I can't help but laugh a little each time she mumbles in her sleep.
I jerked my body to a sitting position, where my eyes shot across the camper to see that the boy, Carl, was nowhere to be seen. Where could he have gone? I asked myself. We're in the city, Kate. He could be anywhere.
Mentally face-palming myself for thinking he would stick around, I pulled the blankets off of me and stretched my arms out in front of me. Lily woke up shortly afterwards. Her little cheeks were pink and warm. She might be getting a cold or possibly even a fever.
I helped her get out of bed and placed her on the counter, where she sat and swung her feet back and forth like dangling keychains. My fingers brushed through her thick blonde hair. I always helped her redo her braids when she woke up. It's part of our little morning routine, if that's what you wanna call it.
"There you go, Lily," I smiled, pinching her cheeks as a grandmother would. She winced and put on a frown. This only caused me to giggle at her so-called angry face. She hates it when I pinch her cheeks.
"Where's that boy?" she asked, taking note that he was no longer with us. I followed as she pointed her little finger towards the empty bed and shrugged cluelessly.
"Carl? I don't know.. He must've left last night."
"Do you think he's okay?"
She looked up at me, her eyes showing a hint of fear as well as a hint of excitement. It honestly made me anxious to know that the only new survivor my age that we came across could be getting eaten alive right now. I shook the thought from my mind.
I offered to take a look around and slid to the door, ignoring her question as I attempted to push myself outside. Locked.
"What the fuck?" I whispered, taking a step back to look for a way out. That fucking asshole. Disappointed for speaking such language in front of my 6 year old sister, I groaned and pushed harder against the door. Just as I was getting ready to bash into it, the sound of shoes against the pavement and low voices startled me. They were coming this way.
"Lily, stay quiet," I demanded, scooting her closer to my side. Her arms wrapped around my thigh as she poked her head around to see what was going on.
"I told you, she isn't a threat."
"We don't know that."
"She's a young girl, Rick. She didn't hurt Carl. What makes you think that she's going to do anything to us?"
"You can't trust anyone anymore. I told you that. You know that. The group knows that, so I'm making the decisions."
I caught two rich southern accents just by listening intently to their words. One was low and sounded irritated, the other sounded a bit frightened and it was definitely the voice of a woman possibly in her late 20's. They must be part of Carl's group. That piece of shit trapped us in here so that they could come get us. I bet he even took my n–
I stopped suddenly, noticing that the voices had also stopped. When I reached for the locket, just as I expected, it wasn't there. My weapons were also nowhere to be seen. I was seconds away from going on a killing spree. That necklace is my whole life, besides Lily. And that dirty little thief snatched it from me.
