My Younger, Better Years

Hi. I'm Kyleigh, or Ky, as my friends call me. I'm 13 years old, (going on 30...), and I'm blind in my right eye. Yeah, so I bet you weren't expecting that, but it's true. When I was born, I had a cataract in my right eye. The doctors didn't notice it until my mom brought me in the hospital 3 weeks later, saying that my right eye was non-responsive. They did surgery to remove the cataract, but they said they couldn't do anything for my blindness. They said it was not the cataract that cause it, but it was merely a birth defect that I would have to live with my whole life.

My early ages I don't really remember, but looking back at all the adorable pictures of me as a baby, the adorable-ness was just on the outside. I was a grumpy, unhappy baby. I wonder why? Oh, wait, I think I have a guess! Maybe because the doctors thought it would be a good idea to patch up my seeing eye and make me just use my deformed right eye that I couldn't see out of!!! Also, my mom had to put contacts in me, as I was only six months old!!! God bless her!!! Another reason was probably because I went to have surgery for my blind eye every 6 weeks. I've had over 12 eye surgeries before I was even a year old. Then, the doctors gave my mom 3 choices. Kill me now as a baby, remove my right eye and put a glass eye in, or let me be a strong girl and leave my small right eye alone as it is. My mom pick the right decision, leading me to where I am today. A strong, independent, unique girl with one small, blind eye that doesn't phase me.

I kept my right eye as it was, and it actually improved, as the doctors said it wouldn't. I can see only a little out of it. Small, blurs of deformed shapes and colors. And yes, before you ask me, I have 20-20 vision in my left seeing eye. So, I guess you can say that my early life was a little busy. Let's continue as I'm older now.

My years of three went great. I had a nice loving family that included my mom, dad, Gage (my 16-year-old brother, that has autism.), my nana, my grampa (We call him Gaga), and my two half brothers, Moloy and Nelson. (My half brothers are ten years older that me...) My life was the typical perfect family. We all lived in NC in a HUGE and BEAUTIFUL house that my dad built by hand and just lived life we should have. Then, disaster struck.

My parents divorced. Before the tragedy happened, Nana and Gaga moved to Virginia because of Gaga's job. So after the divorce was final, Mom grabbed her mega confused 3-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son and headed off to live with my Nana in VA. I guess life was good then, but I still missed my dad a lot. Living with Nana and Gaga was actually kinda fun. We had lots of kids in their neighborhood and I played a lot outside. Meanwhile, I also broke my arm then... Hahaha :p
