Allen didn’t get far. At the base of the escalator he saw the tall man. Allen leapt off about half way down. Cross screeched his name. Allen ran. He had to get the man away from the others. He didn’t hear the second set of feet hitting the ground running.
Kanda flew into Cross, knocking the guy down a short flight of stairs. The man didn’t fall until both of Kanda's feet hit him in the chest. He kicked him in the face from above him. Rushing forward he didn’t bother to wait for the fallout. Allen meet him outside in the parking lot.
Kanda took the boys arm racing to the truck. He had the doors unlocked before they got there. Allen was just closing the door as Kanda reversed. They both saw the tall red haired man holding the broken mask her wore to his face.
“He looks pissed.’ Allen said with a laugh.
“How many goons does he have?” Kanda asked. His keen eyes scanning the area for any sign of the others. “Allen, are my brother safe?” he screamed.
“No.” Allen said. His left eye was glowing. Up ahead he could see Rat and Shion. Shion was good at running, not like Nai, but good enough. He was darting around cars as three men chased them. Rat was holding off two more with a switch blade in one hand and a tire iron in the other.
Kanda saw the fiasco as he came closer. He honked. Shion saw the truck. Allen noted the wicked smile as the pale boy quickly changed directions. Shion ran in front of the truck. Kanda didn’t even slow. He hit the first two attackers at twenty miles an hour. They fell under the wheels as he raced to his brother.
Before he got there something hit the truck. Looking back they saw Lavi his hammer growing smaller in his hand. He carried an unconscious Gareki on his shoulder. He turned to look at Allen.
Allen’s blood turned to ice at the look on his half brother face.
“No, not Nai.” He whispered. Lavi extended the magical hammer for Shion to hop onto. Rat was running along side the truck. That was when Allen saw the blood leaking down Lavi's back. He laid the wounded boy down so Shion could take care of him.
“Nai was still running toward the bus stop last I saw him.” He called to Allen. Allen rolled down his window. He knew he didn’t have to yell to loudly. The boy would have his ears open.
“Nai, if you can, come to lot 5, hurry little brother.” Kanda looked over to him.
“Can you drive?” he sked. Allen nodded. Kanda stopped the truck.
“I am going to the bus stop. Keep circling here. If he heard you I should pass him along the way. Go slow though.” Allen looked at him.
“We won't be here when you come back. Shion will stabilize Gareki. Rat will take him to the hospital. Don’t worry. Those doctor hands of Shion's are your brothers best bet right now. We know how to get another car. We will get Nai.” With that Allen got out of the truck. He stood beside it looking around. His left eye glowing.
Kanda said nothing. The dark teen took off on a run toward the bus stop. “He's stable. Lavi stay here with him. Keep pressure here.” He instructed. Rat got behind the wheel. He looked at Shion.
“Just let me know when you get him. When your all safe.” He waved good bye as he pulled out. Allen and Shion were not in the rearview mirror when the boy glanced back.
Nai had met them by the pole that had a large number 5 above it. Allen had already located a car. They walked with their hoods up toward it. Several men were wandering the lot as well. Allen saw Johnny leading a group away from the boys. Out of nowhere a hand slapped over Allen's mouth. Shion spun but relaxed instantly. Allen looked at him confused.
“It's me. Come on. I have a way out.” Kanda let go of Allen. The boy glared at him but said nothing. Kanda led them over to a sewer drain. “That arm of yours…” Allen was already pulling the grate off before the other could finish.
“Nai.” Kanda said. But the small pale teen took a step back. Shion dropped swiftly into the hole. After a few heartbeats his voice floated up to them.
“Clear.” Nai hurried down as Allen watched their surroundings.
“Go.” Kanda hissed. Allen shook his head.
“You. Cross saw your face. Go.” He demanded. Kanda dropped into the hole. Allen used the ladder steadying himself he pulled the grate back over the hole. He met the others below ground.
“Nai?” Allen pointed to the various tunnels branching off around them. The small boy stepped away from them. He listened intently for a few minutes, then motioned for them to follow. The group headed out. The water was clean that splashed around them until about twenty minutes later.
The smell hit them first but the three pale boys were used to worse. They didn’t even flinch at it. Kanda gagged. Nai took Lavi's scarf off to hand to him. He mimed placing it over his nose and mouth. Kanda did so begrudgingly.
No one spoke as they walked. Nai in the lead, then Shion, Kanda and Allen was watching their backs. It was well over an hour later that Nai led them to another ladder. Allen maneuvered past them. He took the ladder quickly. Lifting the heavy bars with his left hand he looked around. It appeared they were in an alley. He saw no movement.
Swiftly he climbed out. Shion came next as Allen helped Nai after him Kanda was last. The dark teen wandered away from the others breathing deeply of the fresher air. He looked like he might gag, but ended up controlling it.
“Where?” Allen sked.
“The hospital is about three blocks that way.” He pointed. “I thought Kanda would want to get to his family quickly.” He added. They others heard the concern in his voice. It killed Allen to know he wouldn’t ever know if Gareki was alright.
“Go.” He ordered Kanda.
“Like hell. If they know they shot Gareki, this will be the first place they come. I'm not leaving you until your safe.” He added.
“But, your brothers need you.” Shion was amazed at his selfishness.
“Rat would kill me if I walked into that place right now. He knows I will help you. He's strong.” He added when the three teens looked at him.
“Well we need to get cleaned up.” Shion muttered.
Allen took the led, but it proved difficult and Kanda ended up taking them to the basement of the hospital. There were showers. Two showered while the other two found clean clothes. Then the other two showered.
Once they were clean, Nai took them to Rat. The three boys hid in an office while Kanda went out to talk to his brother. Rat came to see them. He gave Shion a hug as he fist bumped Nai, a nod to Allen.
“They said Gareki was going to be ok. He's been to surgery it only took them an hour to get the bullet out of his shoulder. Nothing was damaged, they said he was lucky.”
“He's in recovery now.” Lavi added he had made sure no one took interest of where the dark boys had gone before coming to see them. He hugged Nai tightly.
“Ok, you two are staying here. Lavi have you…”
“He's setting everything up. You know where the rendezvous is?” Allen nodded. Lavi sighed.
“I swear, Allen he didn’t follow me!” he said. Allen gave him a smile.
“I know. If he had thought we would be there he would have more than just six guys and Johnny with him.” Lavi nodded thinking out that logic. Allen squeezed Kanda's arm.
“We have to go.” That was all the good bye they were going to get. Nai sniffled.
“I'm sorry it’s just to dangerous.” Allen patted his brothers back.
“What are you boys doing in here?” a back door into the room had opened.
“Sorry sir, my little brother got lost looking for the restrooms.” Allen said. The man glared at them telling them it was around the next corner. They thanked him and hurried out. They reached the main hall, the white hair was covered quickly with scrub hats.
“Gareki!” Nai screeched. The boy was leaning heavily on the nurses desk.
“You're safe.” He whispered. He sagged as his strength left him. Nai and Rat rushed to his side. They dragged him back into bed. Gareki clutched Nai to him.
“Let go. We need to get as far away from you as we can.” Allen tugged his brother away. It took more effort than it should as both boys tried to cling to each other.
“Well look what we have here?’ The door shut, the lock turned. “Cross's little pet projects I assume?” a tall man with black hair and glasses stood looking at them. Johnny beaming from his side.
“It's ok Allen. I told him everything years ago.” Johnny reassured his friend. Kanda was instantly between the tall man and the pale teens. Rat at his side trying to block the scared and damaged boys. Gareki pulled Nai to him shielding him as best he could from the bed.
“I am Chief Komui Lee, head of the Black Order's science division.” The man made no attempt to come closer. “We have been tracking Cross for years. See if we went out looking for you three, we were sure you would run. But when Lavi and Bookman came to join us…” he gave a nod to the lanky teen who hadn’t moved.
“Lavi, you didn’t?” The pain of betrayal was heavy in Shion's voice.
“I did it to save you. Komui took the chip out. I became an exorcist for the black order. Shion, you were right. They didn’t know what Cross was doing.”
“Cross went rouge five years ago. We have been searching for him.” Komui took the chair at the foot of the bed. He crossed his long legs. “When we found Johnny about three years ago he told us of you three. It took time to get things in order. Cross is slippery.” He took his glasses off to clean them.
“He has nothing compared to how slick you three are. There is nothing to be found on you. You have covered your tracks better than anyone I know. And I work with some of the best finders in the world.” He replaced his glasses.
“Now, here is what is going to happen. A team has already picked up Bookman and Karen. They are in route to headquarters now.” He folded his long thin fingered hands in his lap. “Cross has slipped past us once more, but don’t worry. You are quite safe here.” He looked over them all.
“You will all be leaving with me once I get the signal all is ready.” He added. “You three have been dragged into this. I am sorry for that. Unfortunately you will no longer be allowed to go home. Your protection of these specimens has placed you on Cross's watch list. Your parents were notified of your safety. A team is filling them in currently.” He stayed addressing the dark teens.
“Komui, you said…” Lavi was cut off as the chief held up his hand.
“I only used that term so they would know which three I was talking about. Once at headquarters, you three will have to go through some testing. You will not be kept in the lab or in cages.” A darkness flashed across the pointed surreal face. “You will each have your own room.” He added.
There was a sequence of three knocks, pause, two knocks, a longer pause. Komui sat listening. Then one single knock came. Johnny opened the door. An orderly came in with a wheelchair. Lavi and Kanda got Gareki into the chair. Allen stood on guard, his eye glowing again. Komui looked fascinated at this, but said nothing for now. Instead he did something that had everyone instantly on high alert, he put his arm around Nai, walking the boy out of the room right after the wheelchair. Shion and Allen rushed to be by their brother.
Komui's other hand was behind his back. He allowed Nai to walk between himself and Gareki. The seated teen took hold of Nai's hand. It was apparent that he was waiting for a chance to yank the boy away from the tall statue walking with them.
No one stopped to question them. Shion assumed it was because of the white lab coat Komui was wearing. He looked like a doctor with some patience. They walked right out of the building. A large black van waited just in front of Kanda's truck. Johnny walked to the truck where another man was sitting behind the wheel.
“How did you drive that up here, you're blind, Noise?” Johnny asked. A growl was heard from Kanda. Noise chuckled. “I had help.” He tapped his ear. Johnny giggled understanding what he meant. The others just looked on more confused.
“Please get inside.” Komui held open a hand toward the van. Gareki had already been placed inside. Nai sitting stiffly next to him. With a heavy heart Allen nodded to his brother. Shion swallowed, then climbed into the seat behind the pair, Rat leaping in next to him. Allen took the last space as Kanda sat beside the door. Komui closed it. They felt trapped.
Lavi climbed into the passenger seat as Komui took the driver’s chair. The piercing green eye of Lavi locked to Allen's indigo one. “This isn’t betrayal, Allen. I swear. It’s the best thing for you. You no longer have to run.” He said.
“Because our brother got us captured.” Allen spat.
“Once we do the testing and answer any questions you have. And.” Komui held up a finger. “You listen to all we have to say. You will be free to either stay on with us or leave.”
“I find that hard to believe.” Allen snarled.
“Allen,” Shion paused looking at pair in the front.
“He's telling the truth.” Gareki said.
“You will let us go.” Allen said still uncertain.
“If you choose to yes.” Komui said. They drove for several hours. No one really talking after that. Gareki laid his head in Nai's lap. He fell asleep to the pale boy running his fingers through his hair. Nai was looking out the window at the passing scenery. Every so often Shion would check Gareki's forehead and pulse.
