We had been driving for what felt like forever and now I could see already see the build up of traffic ahead of us signaling we had arrived at our destination. We stopped at some red lights and I looked around, seeing all the big buildings and people walking on the streets.
"Hey....can you punch in that address in the GPS again," I heard my brothers voice say.
I reached for his GPS and punched in the address that was sent to me, Bay Ridge street 2. It is said to be a lovely living area and most people are friendly, but I'll be the judge that.
My brother made a few turns here and there and finally he made the last turn and there it was, coming into sight, my new home, a brick red five-story apartment building. The neighborhood didn't look too crowded. Just like my old neighborhood.
My brother parked the car and helped me get my things out of the trunk.
"Come on, Rex, we're home," I said as I opened the backseat door and grabbed his collar and led him into the building.
We got into the elevator and I pressed last floor. 'Why did I have to choose the last floor', I thought to myself. 'Well, at least you don't get to hear footsteps above you'. The elevator was filled with silence, each one of us engrossed in our own thoughts until we heard the elevator doors opening at the 'ding' bringing us back to reality.
We got out of the elevator and walked further away from it trying to look for my door number. There were only three apartments on each floor and mine was '501', that must mean it should be the first door.
"This way, that's my door," I said walking and pointing towards a black door. My brother followed closely behind me. I took out my key from my bag, unlocked and opened the door. There was a hallway, a door leading to the kitche, another straight ahead leading to probably a bedroom, another leading to the living room. I walked further into the apartment and it was small and cosy, just how I like it. It had enough space for me and I couldn't have gone for anything bigger. There was a door right across my bedroom, which I'm guessing was the guest room.
I walked back to find my brother and found him seating on a high stool in the kitchen.
"I love this place, smaller than my old place but I can work with that," I started as I stood next to the counter and let go of Rex to roam around and make himself familiar with our new home.
"Will you stay the night or you will be heading back?" I asked.
"I think I will be hitting the road, that's if you'll be okay to stay the night alone," he anwered.
"Yeah, I'll be okay, besides, I'm not alone, Rex is here."
"Okay then, I better start getting back before it gets too dark out," he said as he started standing up and grabbed his car keys.
I walked him to the door and paused watching him walk to the elevator.
"You take care of yourself Al."
"I will and drive safe, send my love to mother." I said and smiled as I watched the elevator doors closing.
I sighed and walked back into the apartment and locked the door after me then looked at all the unpacked boxes around the living. It's a good thing I have four days till I have to report for work, I can unpack and explore the city, but right now I need something to eat and rest.
I got to unpacking a few boxes in the kitchen and placed all the items in their rightful places. I moved to my room and packed all my clothes into the walk in closet. There was a bed in the middle of the room and a door leading to a balcony.
Later I took a shower and decided to go down the street to look for a food joint.
I was walking down the street, when Rex ran towards the road.
"Rex," I shouted and ran towards the road trying to catch up with him but it was too late as I heard the loud screeching of brakes.
This can't be happening, I panicked, seeing the driver step out of the car.
