After the fire, the Basons let Caroline and Eliza live with them for a while. They let Eliza and Caroline share a room in their former guest room. Eliza didn't like this one bit. Every day she would complain about how Caroline snored or how she could hear water flowing through the pipes. Caroline was beginning to get tired of this constant complaining. She wanted to put a stop to this once and for all. On a cold November evening, Caroline hurried and got her nightgown on and her moccasins on. She climbed into the small bed and pulled up the patchwork quilt covers that Mrs. Bason had made a year ago. Eliza got into her nightgown and slippers and slowly walked over to her bed. Caroline turned off the lights. You could tell on her face that she was going to make another complaint.
"It is so cold in here!"
"It isn't that cold, now go to sleep."
"If mom and dad were here this would have never happened!" Eliza yelled. Caroline grew red and angry.
"Don't you realize how lucky we are! We have nice and caring neighbors who took us in. Mom and Dad would be happy that we are safe and sound in this house! But you don't care one bit! Try going to an orphanage and see how it's like there. You will love it a lot." Caroline yelled furiously back. She wasn't going to have anymore complaints for a long time.
"Then maybe I will go!" Eliza screamed.
"No you won't!" Caroline yelled back. "Do you know how horrible it is there?"
"Yes, but it is a way to be with other kids like us!"
"You are not going, that is final! Now good night!" Caroline yelled. She then went to sleep and so did Eliza. They were both angry at each other. Was Eliza really going to leave?
